Ryan Howard 5-Year Extension 5/$125MM + $10MM buyout THREAD

The parking went up $3 a car and they just recently sold naming rights for their club suites. They also increased ticket prices. There is a way to increse revenue and they are clearly doing so. I will suck it up and pay $20 for parking next year if the money continues to go in to the team.

I know. They're spending lots of money and sending emails. It's not 1997 anymore.

Emails were pretty prevalent in 97.

If he doesn't, it won't be his fault. It would be ownership explicitly instructing him not to. That would be the only possible explanation

He won't offer him arb because WERTZ will be sitting pretty on a shiny new four-year, $65 million deal LET'S FUCKING GO

i only got through page 10, so my apologies if someone else already expressed this opinion

-- i remember when j-roll signed his deal there was quite a bit of hand-wringing on pp that he was being overpaid and his value wouldn't hold up over the course of the contract. turns out, that was a bargain for us.

-- howard is a beast right now. he will be a beast for the next 3 years. what's more, he's improved physically and defensively the last 3 years running.

-- yea, it might blow to have him on the team 2014 onwards, but we really don't know how things are going to break between now and then. he might get traded. he might get even better. (but most likely he'll get worse and we'll all be sad).

-- there was no way he was going to get less than $20mm/yr if he went on the free market. no way. yeah, he ain't no a-rod, but he's our guy and he's probably worth it to us.

-- we have a million more OF prospects than 1B prospects, this makes more sense than signing werth.

-- maybe we're raising payroll. werth will be a phillies, too!

whatever, i'm a bit dismayed at the 2014-2016 implications, but overall, i'm glad ryan howard will remain a phillies.

For a moment I was thinking this would mean draft picks for the loss of Jayson Werth but then I realized that Smuggy will be too scared to offer him arbitration.
