was howard really going to get the second highest contract of the 4?

Absolutely. The other 2 haven't won a ROY, MVP or WFC...

It's gonna be funny when we extend Werth tomorrow

I suppose this was the urgency. Pujols isn't going to be a FA. Neither is Gonzalez. SD will either trade him to a team that will resign him or they will resign him themselves. Fielder? Most likely shot at FA.

I assume Rube was thinking that the the Pujols/AGon deals were going to shoot up Howard's market price, so he would strike first. It's still stupid.

The Phillies have made about as much money as they're going to make the past couple years. The park is sold out, they made it to the world series, etc... why would anyone expect the payroll to jump significantly higher than where it is now? I'm sure it'll go up a little, but not enough to keep Wertz around, barring some other move to shed salary

gotcha. so i guess they see it as a fielder vs howard thing. and that howard > fielder in the FA market.

Ticket prices can go up. Attendance has gone from 38-42-44-45 from 2007-10, obviously it's maxed out now, but it has just maxed out. I know no one knows what our deal is on the TV revenue front, but with ratings continuing to climb you have to imagine some of that money is coming back to the Phillies.

I think Victorino is gone after this year to make room for Werth.

OF in 2011 is:
Ibanez - LF
Wertz - CF
Brown - RF

2012
Brown - LF
Gillies - CF
Wertz - RF
This is a simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball.

Rube's financial advisor told him we're going to start seeing inflation kick up within the next year and probably be roaring along pretty ferociously 5 years from now. The ticket sales probably tell him he can up prices over that period and still sell out. I think he keeps Werth. He loses Ibanez/Lidge/Victorino/Romero/Madson and it looks no better than 50-50 that Hamels gets extended for big $ or extended at all.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.

I could see Victorino being traded for sure. It seems impossible now, but this is the same guy who traded Cliff Lee to make room for Roy Halladay. Rube cares not about PR hits.

He only cares that Werth make enough for bong hits

Well I just got an e-mail from the Phillies, so it's not a dream (or a nightmare, I hope).

These things always look scary. So far at 30 Howard seems to taking the steps to both keep in shape and improve his game.

Anyway if you don't like 5/$125M do you like 6/$138M better? This will be chump-change compared to what Pujols is going to cost the Cardinals.

There is plenty of other supply out there of comparable players though, like I said a few pages back. Lee, Dunn, Pena, Konerko after this year. Berkman after 2011 in addition to those guys. A team with money to spend isn't necessarily going to have to go to 9 figures to fill their 1B spot

But I guess they were scared of the Pujols contract coming first, or Gonzalez getting traded to the Sox and getting 200mm

dajafi wrote:There's some chance this turns out to be our Vernon Wells deal. But unlike Wells, who had one really good year before the Jays made a ruinous bet on illusory upside, this guy has hit at around Hall of Fame caliber for five years. He's shown more, not less commitment to conditioning and improvement since getting paid before '09, and (the sentimental part) he's a signature player of the greatest era in club history.

It's not a great deal, certainly not a bargain. He might or might not have gotten something this good on the open market after 2011; probably depends on the state of the economy at that point, honestly. But I can't say this is a total disaster or a completely illogical move either.

(I just hope he remembers how to draw a $#@! walk.)

Yes.

There is another factor sort of alluded by Dajafi ...

Ryan isn't just his on-field production. It's an investment in perception too. A marketing cost. Homegrown power hitter super-star in glory era of WS competitors. A guy capable of hitting 40-50hrs. The big slugger is always a popular role. He's a good guy in the club-house. So they invested in something more than on-field numbers.

I agree, as I mentioned the Thome comparison back on page 6, that he DOES need to take more walks to up the OBP. Become more selective. This is surely possible!?!

PTK if you believe in trends, don't look at Howard's walk numbers since 2007

Depending on the status of the contract, they could potentially sell their radio and (moreso) TV rights for more in the near future.

I wonder if there are any plans to expand the stadium? From the start, I always thought it was a bit too small, and I think adding ~4-5000 seats to push it to the high 40K's might make some sense, though CBP's capacity is pretty much in line with most other MLB ball parks.

I would assume we'll see some jumps in ticket prices this off-season if the Phillies make a post-season run again.
