Law has been pumping up last year's draft class from the moment they were selected. It's imperative to have another great class this year. That's why I'm whole heartedly against giving up a pick for a guy like Jimenez.
I know it would be a high second rounder, but not even a second round pick?
Seems like he could legit improve the rotation, and if all goes to hell, couldn't we then flip him, perhaps for a prospect or two that'd be worth more (and available sooner) than a 2nd round pick this year?
I"m just not in any way interested in giving away a pick that's essentially a 1st-rounder in what's supposed to be a deep draft. The farm system has finally turned a corner and the Phils now have their highest pick in about 15 years. It took a while but they're doing it right the last two years.
I haven't really paid too close of attention to the minors/drafts etc. but after looking at some stuff recently I agree wholeheartedly with this. Jimenez is a crap shoot really, and an expensive one when you factor in salary plus lost draft pick. If you look at the projections for Burnett and Jimenez for next season, they are pretty similar and steamer has Burnett at 3.4 WAR compared to 2.5 for Jimenez. Not that that is the be all end all, but I think it speaks pretty well to the relative risk/reward between the two.
