It's imperative to have another great class this year. That's why I'm whole heartedly against giving up a pick for a guy like Jimenez.

I know it would be a high second rounder, but not even a second round pick?

Seems like he could legit improve the rotation, and if all goes to hell, couldn't we then flip him, perhaps for a prospect or two that'd be worth more (and available sooner) than a 2nd round pick this year?

I"m just not in any way interested in giving away a pick that's essentially a 1st-rounder in what's supposed to be a deep draft. The farm system has finally turned a corner and the Phils now have their highest pick in about 15 years. It took a while but they're doing it right the last two years.

I haven't really paid too close of attention to the minors/drafts etc. but after looking at some stuff recently I agree wholeheartedly with this. Jimenez is a crap shoot really, and an expensive one when you factor in salary plus lost draft pick. If you look at the projections for Burnett and Jimenez for next season, they are pretty similar and steamer has Burnett at 3.4 WAR compared to 2.5 for Jimenez. Not that that is the be all end all, but I think it speaks pretty well to the relative risk/reward between the two.

Burnett makes more sense and they should go hard for him. I still think Jimenez might be a really good value signing at this point, though. He has true #2 upside and you can get him at what you'd now pay for a #3.

Edit: of course, I wanted to sign Jimenez then flip Lee for a package led by an almost-ready pitcher like Bundy or C. Martinez, figuring that Jimenez + top prospects + savings > Lee + 2nd round pick. This clearly ain't happening.

Matt Gelb ‏@magelb 2m
Phillies minor-lg LHP Christopher O’Hare suspended 50 games by MLB for drug of abuse. He was a 23d rounder in 2013.

Projected in last place, 72 wins, 4th pick in 2015 draft.

These are pretty worthless though, IMO

finally got around to checking these out in detail.

his ops projections for brown, utley, howard, and ruf (0.755,0.757, 0.720, and 720) all look way too low to me, to the tune of an unreasonable deduction of about 3 wins.

just about everything else looks plausible, though i would argue that the more optimistic projections of other systems are more realistic in the cases of revere, c.hernandez, galvis, and r.hernandez.

i'm just going to laugh hysterically like jack nicholson as the joker when he realizes his face has been permanently disfigured when the phillies don't sign aj burnett -- the one old as shit player who was once either a member of the phillies or a target of the phillies that they didn't bother signing.

Scott Freedman is that extern if the name didn't ring a bell. That is very encouraging.
