Seriously though, what the hell is going on with the Phillies? Why are we now complete non-players in the FA market?
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

I think Ruben was likely told to pump the brakes on the big signings and large dollar deals, thus negating his one discernible skill, soooooo here we are

The Phillies have seemingly always required revenues to justify spending, rather than spending to increase revenues. Perhaps the ticket sale writing is on the wall.

I’ve seen Hezbollahis hiding from Mossad who were easier to find than Mujica in October.

I think money is only part of the issue. I think (or at least I'd like to think) that they now realize the next Golden Era will only be achieved through development and they're simply not going to part with draft choices for mediocre FA's. Again, that's my hope.

OTOH, with their resources it makes no sense at all that they wouldn't be major players for a guy like Tanaka, who is in his prime and would cost them nothing but money. IMO he's just the sort of player whom they should always be pursuing vigorously.

definitely. just have a couple of comments

-- tanaka probably wasn't coming here. while i wasn't expecting the yankees to be outbid, i am halfway surprised he didn't sign with a west coast team given their relative proximity to japan. but when you combine the yankees' willingness to spend and their international presence, they were almost a shoo-in.

-- what's frustrating about the phillies with regard to your first point is their apparent hokey-pokey they're doing with "rebuilding" or whatever they'd like to consider it. their decision to rebuild probably should have been made in 2012 and dealt lee and hamels at the deadline along with pence and vic; and furthering that, utley last year. how papelbon never became a tiger is beyond me but i understand it takes two to tango.

this just sucks. it's like someone dying but the funeral keeps getting postponed. if they were keeping star players in able to score the tv contract, fine, but i wish they'd at least pretend having a plan on putting some of that new income back into the team if they're really trying to win now

The FA market wasn't exactly the best. I'm not surprised at how inactive they were
