Yes, if we can only recapture the magic of those 8 homers he hit in 76 games / 230 PA vs RHP, everything will be OK :)

Honestly, he had a nice OPS vs RHP last year, but had a .370 BABip against them, too. .334 for his career.

He looked awful last year, physically. If it's arthritic knees, that's a major concern, obviously. And I would obviously cut bait if possible.

But let's not completely discount the possibility that he feels better and performs somewhere between last year's and 2011's production TM

I wouldn't discount the possibility. But there was a pretty darn significant intervening event between the end of his 2011 season and now.

Did you miss my thing about the arthritic knees and even I wishing to cut bait if we could? As for the rest of BSG, I feel like the possibility of Howard sucking forever has been pretty well priced in

Gelb, with Amaro quotes on Hernandez:

"We think Roberto Hernandez will help us," Amaro said. "Our scouts and our analytics people looked at the middle-of-the-road, back-end starters and we felt like he would be a good choice for us."

"He gave up a lot of homers last year and we think that's atypical with what he does," Amaro said. "He's more of a ground-ball guy. We think that he's going to be better than that, particularly."

I should hope he thought so. The alternative, that Amaro is also on the Nationals' payroll and knows that Hernandez is likely to be below-average/awful, is too far-fetched.

The Analytics "people" is just one guy right? Our good ole extern. All the scouts are each going to give him a calculator at the gift exchange.

"I don’t know if he's a three starter," Amaro said. "I know he’s pretty reliable, pretty consistent. He has over 60 wins over the last several years. For a guy that I guess takes a lot of heat, he still wins baseball games. We need people to eat up innings and be reliable and he's been one of those guys for us."

I saw your reference to the arthritic knees. I didn't see the one about the ruptured Achilles, though.

They're not unrelated IMO, but I'm more worried about knee(s) at this point

In any case, half of my equation was post injury, and I don't consider it that pie in the sky

its funny that amaro says these things, but i thought we all liked KK until we didnt like him anymore and then we started liking him again, and when he inevitably pitches well again for a stretch this year, we'll like him again. KK is solid. Of course, he makes my head hurt so i'd rather just be past him at this point and i guess this is more about amaro pointing at the wins. its the jamie moyer effect
