But seriously, if Rube signs Tanaka at a reasonable deal, I think I'll give him a solid C for the offseason.

Tanaka is the top FA SP available and probably won't be signing a "reasonable deal" with any team. What would merit an A?

it was only 11 starts in chicago but he was putting up the best numbers of his career. doesn't make sense to trash garza and name jimenez immediately after that either.

Tanaka is THE guy Rube should be targeting: Costs nothing in terms of prospects or draft picks; it's only a matter of money, which is the Phils' best resource at the moment. He's worth overspending for.

With the new posting system, say the Phillies, Yankees, Angels and Rangers bid the max 20 mil, then Tanaka can negotiate with any of them.

I don't see the Phillies outbidding all of those teams or if money is equal why Tanaka would choose the Phillies over any of those other teams (well probably Phillies over Angels).

Maybe we could blow the Yankees out -- if they're serious about the $189M -- with a heavy front load. But I know there are other considerations playing in NY. Can't really see the Angels going big like that yet again, or for the Dodgers to bother, with that rotation.

Front load doesn't matter, luxury tax is calculated by AAV.

He's had two surgeries this offseason... a second surgery on his shoulder, and a surgical microfracture on his ankle... and likely starts the 2014 season on the DL.
