Random Thoughts of the Wrong Brothers

I'm trying to find a better source than MLB Trade Rumors, but apparently the posting system could change to limit the size of the bid and favor teams with poor records

that seems worse. good teams would have absolutely no shot. if the max allowable bid is known it is just a matter of what shitty team wants said player.

It's not worse as it relates to Tanaka, since him to the Yanks was a foregone conclusion. I don't think it's worse for the Phillies after last year's record (and if struggles continue), either, since there are more high-win teams than low-win teams with deep pockets. The posting fee would still be exorbitant, after which you have to actually sign the guy

“Didn’t think about it all,” the Phillies' GM said when asked if he considered non-tendering Mayberry. “He was not a non-tender candidate for us. Any player who can hit 14 home runs in this day and age off the bench in limited at-bats and have the versatility he does … there was no thought to non-tendering him.”

you know what though, he hit 14 HRs. That's a number they put on the back of a baseball card.

Every time he opens his mouth, I hate him a little more. I've never disliked anyone associated with the Phils more than I dislike that asshat.

Along those same lines, every time he makes a mind-blowing statement like that one, and you think "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard a GM say." Then you wait a couple of weeks, and he puts one out there that's even worse.

I mean, I get talking up your players. He shouldn't say "of course we thought about it--he's a turd." But there's no reason he can't say "John's coming off of a tough year and our roster is getting filled up, so yeah we had to at least consider it, but we thought that he brings enough power and versatility to the table that it was worth tendering him."

Setting aside whether he's actually correct, that hypothetical quote is 900% better than what he actually said.

he only had 11 homeruns last year btw

I've always liked Mayberry a little more than most (probably because I don't blame him for his ill-advised at-bats against righties) but after last year, this is tough to defend. are we sure that tweeter is right that this means there's definitely no room for Hernandez and Ruf?

Is that different than what he actually said in any meaningful way? By the same token, did you appreciate the more expansive, if not quite SABR parroting, explanation on Frandsen?

I totally understand the big-picture criticism of Amaro, but the shitting on -- and misrepresenting in many cases -- every single statement and move is getting really tiresome. [Certainly not singling you out there, RPF]

Mayberry is the dumbest baseball player in the league right now. No baseball instincts whatsoever.

That irks me, too, as it did with Francisco. But he's right that the market for bench players, even, is high, and we can still trade or cut JMJ

I think you guys are bordering upon absurd with the Mayberry complaining. He costs less than 2mm, is the only other OF who can play CF and hits lefties well, even in his shitty year last year
