Nick Cafardo actually has something decent ish to say about ol Troy:

McClure had opportunities to get back in the game last season but decided to step away. While Red Sox pitchers had off years under McClure, who was replaced at midseason, he maintained a tremendous reputation.

I don't know much about McClure as a pitching coach. I don't think anyone here does either. I know he pitched for like 19 years in the big leagues and he wasn't great or anything. He must have learned something.

He struck out 68 guys one year and walked 68 guys.

If he can teach guys like Aumont and Martin and Diekman and Rosenburg how to command their control he'll be a genius. If the Phillie pitchers improve he'll be a genius. If they don't he'll be a dope I guess. Especially if they get worse.

That's about all we will know.

Can anyone rank pitching coaches by ability and explain their rankings? I know for a fact I can't. Except I know Johnny Spain was real good. But he's dead I think. Also Sal Maglie was real bad if you believe Jim bouton.

His Achilles is shot. He'll have to turn into slugging 1Bman/DH somehow.

While the low slider has always been an issue, I never understood why more pitchers don't throw him the super high fastball like 4 feet out of the zone more often. He's had some pretty comical swings at those over the years.
