I don't think they can, but why would they if they could?

They need to get down to 40, plus add some Rule 5 eligibles. Remember they had a bunch of guys on the 60-day DL at the end of the season. I'm sure they're good with not having to worry about those two stiffs. Cloyd's September face plant must have killed whatever minimal trade value he might have had.

Howard is owed 85 million over the next 3 years. Even if the Phillies paid 45 million of that, do you think any team would give Howard 40 million over 3 years if he were a free agent? Swisher got 4/56. I'd probably rather have Swisher.

If the Phillies want to move Howard, they'd have to eat at least 60-70 million and if that's the price, I'd rather just keep him as a platoon player.

If I recall, Toronto didn't pay much at all to get rid of Wells

To get rid of Howard, the Phils would have to want to do so.

The Brewers might not trade for Howard, but I bet they and potentially a lot of other teams might trade for Ruf. His defense is fine there, and a potential 30 homer guy who walks and makes the minimum has value.

Slick of our GM to assert that he's not a regular.

Yeah but in fairness to Amaro, the prevailing view of both scouts and stat-y types is that he's not a regular. So it's not like there's a hidden market of Moneyball teams that you can play off each other for the highest bid. I'd bet 25+ teams view him the same way we do (I doubt Keith Law and others don't have insiders whispering in their ears).

The 2 or 3 that think of Ruf as a possible 30 HR guy know that the market isn't high so they're not going to trade us starter value just because we say he is a starter.

I was joking about getting back Braun and A-Ram, but I wonder how enticing that would be to the Brewers, who are kind of in NL Central purgatory. You're taking $26M off their books in 2014, plus a $4M buyout for A-Ram thereafter and the gross domestic product of France for the fan- and teammate-reviled Braun.

What if we essentially offered them Howard with us absorbing most or all of his money due after 2014, plus a young player or prospect(s)? I'm obviously skeptical of any team being interested in Howard especially before the start of the season, but it's somewhat of a unique situation where they'll need some marketability and he could maybe possibly excite the Fielder fans a little bit.

It's a salary wash for us (and maybe even a savings depending on who goes to Milwaukee) and Ramirez holds 1B down for a half of a year or the full year until Franco is ready. It's a risk that Franco won't hit like a 1B any time soon, of course, but if he does and Brown plays well the sunk Howard money won't matter much. Maybe get really weird with it and take Lohse's contract, too, for a pitcher like Kendrick or Boner.

(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

I don't think that's as big a roadblock as you do. The fanbase loves Lee and they've traded and shopped him multiple times. I think the idea of Ryan Howard: Ticket Mover has been debunked in recent years, and I think they'd move him if there was any sort of a market for him. The problem is, there isn't.

and i still think that bringing up arm-bar to platoon with both howard and asche (while ruf platoons with both howard and with outfield corner lefties) is a win-win-win solution, maximizing the value of all three and adding a win or two to the scenarios of mattwinks and joecatz over at tgf. that could eliminate the "need" to get ellsbury instead of hart/mclouth
