he can not play delmon fucking young.

he may not get to pick his 25 players, but rtj doesn't force him to mismanage the guys he has.

Not sure about that Young part

I get it. Just don't think it matters much and that people will probably say the same stuff about Sandberg

bbref has the Phils ranked 27th in the majors by run differential+strength of schedule. Braves are 5th, Nats are 21st, Mets are 28th, Marlins are 30th
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

it's natural for people to think that something *they* could theoretically control could make a huge difference. management syndrome.

same thing with talent v. 'player development'. Success factor is probably around 80/20 there. But since middle-aged white guys can do "player development", it's way overvalued.

maybe, maybe not.

but it applies to every facet of business. when the employees start tuning out the management, either you get rid of all the employees, or you find a new voice at the top. its easier for the phillies to get rid of the manager than it is to get rid of 25 players. if charlie's message is no longer getting through, or the players are only playing at 80% speed, then a change is needed. will sandberg save everything and make this a 95 win team? probably not. but im not sure he can do much worse than manuel. and sometimes a fresh voice can make a big difference.

Poor managing is turning them from a 75 win team to a 72 win team. Whatever.

I got more upset about it when we were fighting for the division or a wildcard. Rearranging deck chairs on the titanic this year.

Completely random thoughts on our former pitcher and his reciently signed son...

Phils' Leiter Gets Torched

While I am busting on the kids dad, anyone think it must be awkward that Mark Leiter Sr's wife's name is Allison Leiter, so to the familiar she could be called Al... just like Mark's brother.

Charlie...

"I'm concerned with everybody," Manuel said. "Hey, look, I'm concerned with every [expletive] player I got. Yeah, I'm concerned. I want to win. We say that we want to win the division and we want to go to the World Series, right? I'm concerned about every one of our guys. I'm concerned about that .245 or .248 team batting average. I'm concerned about that.

"I'm not only concerned about one guy, I'm concerned about them all. How about that? I don't know what I can do about it. I can go back to my room and sit there and look at the walls, and get up and come to the ballpark and look at the walls. I don't know what I can do about it. The only thing I can do is to put them out there and let them play."

What if it goes the other way, and the players loyal to Charlie are -- rightly -- furious about him taking the fall for them, and it negatively affects their rapport with Sandberg?

I understand the itchy trigger finger, but Charlie deserves better

Him being a lame duck has helped build up to this. At this point, I'm sure he'd take being dismissed with a measure of relief.

Maybe they want a better draft big/bigger signing pool?

I'm with Grote. Charlie may have some flaws, but there is no question if he's given good players he's capable of taking them all the way. Sandburg is an unknown in that department. Why change? Don't think that the problem is players tuning him out, which would be the actual reason to fire him.

I don't give a crap if it's a 72 or 75 win team. I don't care what players Rube has given him. I don't care what Sandberg might or might not do. Charlie's a professional and, as such, I expect him to pull every lever, throw every switch and do every last little thing in his power to wring every last drop of production and success out of this team. That's his job and he's got to do it to the utmost of his ability, regardless of all other factors. He's captain of the ship and can never, ever not know what to do or give in for a moment to the malaise that seems to have come our the team. It's what I expect of any professional, including myself. All the rest of this stuff is bullshit.

I completely agree. Charlie's had a non-chalant attitude all season. Anytime a reporter asked him a question, he'd respond with la-di-da answer or a joke. This is not the same Charlie of last season even when he desperately tried to motivate his players through the media or by rallying the fans to get on them. He's given up.

It's time to move in up to the front office and sit him right next to Dallas Green. The Phillies will take care of him. In the meantime, let Ryne Sandberg do his thing in preparation for next season.

Charlie is doing exactly what I expected him to do when it became clear that he wasn't getting an extension. The players have blown him off and he doesn't care or have the means to push them to play hard. He shouldn't have been brought back for this season. All that he's doing now is wrecking a season where mediocre play could win the NL East. The BP is trashed; the rotation is in shambles and the position players aren't doing the job that he gives to them. Michael Young as a lead off hitter; are you ****ing me? If he can't stop hitting into DPs, bench him. The Delmon Young experiment that failed but continues? And now Mini Mart is recalled. Seriously, WTHIGO?
