Does Charlie Manuel ever wonder if his team is simply not good enough?

"For about the last nine years, I would never say something like that," Manuel said. "First of all, if we have the right attitude and we play the game right and love to play and all that, I think we can win more games than you could ever think we could. I would never ever say that. I think that we keep going and keep trying to grind it out and then we’ll see what kind of players we've got as far as mental toughness and hard nosed and things like that. You can go a long way sometimes just by wanting to play and playing right."

Out. of. touch.

I actually think that in baseball, if you "have the right attitude and we play the game right and love to play and all that", it can make a big difference on the defense side of the ball. On the other hand, all of that is not going to help you hit the ball if you don't have the talent to actually hit the ball.

How so?

Is he supposed to bat Brown 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th?

Use only DeFratus and Papelbon for 3-4 innings a night?

Bringing Durbin, Bastardo and Horst into pressure situations knowing they're gonna fail every time
Refusing to bat Dom 3rd
Refusing to move Ryan from the cleanup spot
Refusing to bench Delmon
Refusing to use Cesar while Freddy goes a week without a hit

Howard is hitting .252/.297/.431 with one functioning leg and unless he gets hurt and hits the DL he'll be plugged into the cleanup spot every fucking game this year.

His last 110 PAs are mind bottlingly bad

9 XBH. 37 Ks, 8 BBs, 1 of which was intentional. 0.120 ISO. He's not a major league quality first baseman right now.

his in game management is shit. it has been since he got here. he made a lot of bizarre moves in 2008, and they seemed to work out. now that he doesn't have a supremely talented core in their prime, his bizarre decisions work out less frequently. i dont know what he does behind closed doors. im sure the players love him. but if they do, they sure arent showing it on the field.

This is a simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball.

He's our 25th 25th man.

OK

--Stutes and DeFratus pitch two innings each every night

--Dom bats third instead of fifth

--Howard bats 7th

--Nix and Revere take Delmon's at bats (essentially)

--Cesar replaces Freddy

Start the parade

So, because Charlie doesn't have the talent to win a WFC, he shouldn't try to do everything possible, no matter how seemingly minor, to make the club as successful as possible?

I think they'll DL him once Utley is back and/or they fall a few games further behind. (Not saying that's the right course.)

You're absolutely right. Even Votto, a much bitter player, played like shit with meniscus issues

I initially responded to a comment about Manuel "doing his best" to plunge the team into the sea

There's no way to put this current puzzle together in a winning fashion, imo

back in the stone age when I listened to music on CDs, after I inevitably damaged/scratched an album I would start trying to find the songs that I could play without problems. Charlie knows the cd is fucked up, but he's tried playing the same fucking track over and over again for 2+ months.

He can't DL, demote, or acquire players

but he can take howard out of the cleanup spot.
he can manage his bench so that he doesnt have to use pitchers as pinch runners.
he can not play delmon fucking young.

he may not get to pick his 25 players, but rtj doesn't force him to mismanage the guys he has.
