worse than what, gb/PA? not trying to be a dick, this is the first time i've seen someone complain about gb/fb not being a good indicator of a pitcher's groundball tendencies

Yeah, gb/PA. It was more of an aside. Think of the progression for evaluating how effective a pitcher is at striking out batters. First level, look at total K's. But we can do better, so we look at K/9. But even better, we look at K's as a percentage of PAs. A guy that K's 10/9IP is less impressive of a strikeout pitcher if he allows a ton of baserunners per inning.

Take Matt Harvey. This year, he has 0.74 GB/FB ratio, 4th worst in baseball. So if we're using gb/fo to evaluate who the groundball pitchers, he's doing poorly. However, he's middle of the pack in groundballs per plate appearance. He's dominating because he's giving up very few line drives (3 total, in 22 innings), striking a ton of guys out, and walking few. His groundball percentage would look "better" if it included the other outcomes.

102 plate appearances since Phillies last unintentional walk.

I know it's about production and not walks, but that seems excessive to me.

Part 2 of #uselessinfo: 1st time Phillies hitters drew 0 BB in a series of 3+ games since 8/20-23/27 (included loss to Grover C. Alexander!)

It's a chicken and egg thing when you're struggling. Pitchers aren't going to dick around with the zone when you only have one guy swinging well for power

That said, it seems like they're taking too many first-pitch meatballs and then lunging at bad pitches late in the count
