Isn't that what we kind of hoped would happen anyway?

They also talked about how he used to be in mid-season form right away in spring training. He's two years older coming off a year he was injured and he changed his training routine. I don't think I would want him to be treating early spring training like the middle of the season under those circumstances.

I think it's a good idea to predict the downfall of a bunch of guys. That way when one of them does indeed drop off the cliff you can make a big deal about how you "called it." Lol.

Omg.

The problem is no one is interested that a changing of the guard has occurred and Kyle Kendrick is our ace. Kyle is the type of quiet hero that allows this type of thing to happen.

the craziest thing is that Roy Halladay, a Hall of Fame pitcher, had the best season of his career at age 34

I think his 33 age season might have been slightly better but that just means that his 33-34 seasons were his two best which is even crazier.

yeah, splitting hairs sorta. had 17 more innings and a slightly better ERA+ in '10 but his ERA, FIP, xFIP and FIP- were all better in '11. his stretch from 2006-2011 is unbelievable.

109-49, 2.86 ERA, 46 CG, 12 shutouts, 1414.2 IP, 221 BB, 1124 K, 149 ERA+, 1.098 WHIP, 0.7 HR/9, 1.4 BB/9, 7.2 K/9, 5.09 K/BB

I don't think that is all that unusual for Hall of Fame type pitchers. Carlton, of course had his best season at age 27 but his best three year stretch was age 35-37.

Pitchers, great ones anyway, age differently than position players.

I just looked up Randy Johnson and he was fairly similar with a great stretch in his mid to late 30s.

Probably a few more guys like that too.

Whitey Ford was really good at age 34-35. Maddux, Bunning and Schilling were exceptional in their late years also

These rock solid Hall of Famer type talents are important to your club. You gotta sign em for the long haul.

Seriously though, Lots of guys flame out early too. Koufax, Drysdale , Gooden, balance Waiala ( that's actually Valenzuela -- my ipad spells things funny sometimes), guys like that.

Also, the guys who last a long time and who are really good in their 30s are almost always power pitchers.

Uh Smitty, Doc has never been considered a 'power pitcher' and Greg Maddux would take great umbrage with that statement.

Bill James has demonstrated that power pitchers are the guys who last while the finesse types and ground ball guys do not. Halladay threw hard for a long time. 95mph I believe. He had decent K/9 rates although not eye popping. Maddox also struck guys out fairly well when he was in his prime.

I agree that those two aren't the Nolan Ryan, Big Unit types. But they got their Ks and weren't the Scott Erickson, Brandon Webb, Chien Ming Wang types.

Maddux is the pure definition of finesse, his control was so ridiculous that he struckout people purely on being able to put the ball where he wanted on every pitch. Doc's best season's he's never been above 93 on the gun, also his career K/9 is not representative of a power pitcher's arm. Actually Doc's K/9 improvements were during his 30's when he's been the least power pitcheresque of his career.

Ok. You have a good point. I'm going a lot on memory here as I can't find a good article regarding this. I do remember James specifically addressing Maddox regarding this issue. I believe his point was young pitchers who don't strike out more than a certain amount of guys -- and both Halladay and Maddox were well above the mark.

My use of the term power pitcher is misleading here. What I mean is a guy who strikes out a good amount of guys. Regardless, my main point was that a lot of Hall of Fame type pitchers had their best runs of success in their 30s as opposed to their 20s.

Pitchers age differently than hitters.

with Valle in the classic and Ruiz suspended for April - why would Joseph be reassigned in the first cut?? He's only hitting over .400.
