Hamels was great. Moyer, Myers, Eaton and Blanton not really great.

They did have a pretty badass bullpen which is what I'm predicting for our guys this year.

And they were second in the league in runs scored.

Indeed. They've changed their MO. If the pitching is awesome, they don't have to finish 2nd in runs scored to win a lot of games. In theory anyway.

If asche, revere, brown and joseph turn into all stars we'll definitely be alright going forward.

Why stop there? No reason they can't win multiple MVP awards, too.

They can't because Tyson Gillies will be winning them all.

Jesse Biddle is going to win multiple Jesse Biddle Awards too. That's right, he is going to be so good they will rename the Cy Young Award.

I think the biggest decline has been on defense. Those 2008-2010 teams could really catch the ball. There's been a decline in that area and it doesn't look to be much better this year.

Will be strong up the middle. Just need to have the pitchers pitch to the defense's strength. How hard can that be. Plus, they need to strike out a lot of guys. Our pitchers are good at that.

I think the defense will be markedly worse this year.

Just saying almost every team has these kinds of problems, which are much easier for max-payroll teams (with strong revenue streams) to overcome. Which is why you rarely used to see pundits pleading with them to give away highly productive players

What happens if an Upton underperforms and McCann crumbles and/or two of their young starters regress? The Braves can't spend their way out of that.

Obviously that doesn't give us carte blanche, and if Howard or Lee slips we'll absolutely need guys like Brown and Biddle to step up, but I just think the "it's gonna get ugly in Philly" stuff is wildly irrational.

quinn and franco and other good guys in the lower levels could be ready to step up after that.

And just eyeballing it now, that looks like a lower payroll team than now, meaning more acquisitions are possible

I thought you were talking about this year. I don't see how this helps us right now.

This thread? I wasn't speaking specifically to 2013 at all. But now that you mention it, we appear to have flexibility to add a player mid-season

I must have either confused arguments or missed the beginning of this one. Anyway, the flexibility to add a player mid-season doesn't mean much if you don't have the assets to make it happen. Maybe they will but the guys we'd have the inside track on because of payroll flexibility are guys that will require more than Ruf, Asche and Biddle

I re-read my posts here and see how you thought that. I think I'm conflating arguments from different threads a bit.

I'm pretty optimistic about 2013, even if we stand pat or just make a minor move, but am more so pushing back on the "it's gonna get ugly" narrative.

I think it's just typical media piling on. If they have a 17-10 April people will be falling over themselves to make them title contenders again

Yeah that's true. It's possible some of them feel burned for sticking with us last spring, too, and have now swung too far the other way.

I think what really got my human sounding goat was RealKen jumping on the Give Cliff Away train. He's someone I respected. We'll show them though
