It used to be just a playful joke, but Amaro is completely obsessed with mediocre players who have a good handful of games against the Phillies.

Trout, Hamilton and Bourjos would be a pretty sexy OF. You can put up with Bourjos' weak bat tendencies just for that OF defense. Maybe sign Cody Ross as a 4th OFer. Maybe I'll be an Angels fan this year.

Hits the ball real far at times. Especially in batting practice I'm told.

70 raw power

isnt arb eligible till after the 2013 season, won't be a free agent until 2017.

hes a 2-3 win player making $500k for 2013, and probably a total of $6M for the next 3 seasons. considering he's likely to produce about $25-30M of value over that time span, its easy to see why teams would want him.

plus hes righthanded, and 70 RH power is really rare. hes been better on the road the last 2 years. and im not sure why hes sucked in the 2nd half in both seasons, but id say its random, or just inexperience.

the bold move would have been to just start over. but rube isn't the guy to lead a rebuild.

Actually, I think he probably could. He's a smart guy. He has his orders. I think one of them is that he doesn't have the authority to fire Cholly and has to placate him a bit. Another is that he has to stick to his budget, while not embarrassing the owners while sticking to his budget. Another is that he can't do anything that looks too much like rebuilding until the team gets the new TV deal done. Of course another was that he couldn't spend what the owners viewed as unseemly quantities of $$ on draftees or especially brown-skinned kids from south of the border. Phillies owners have always liked to strut around, money is no object, in this thing to win, while tying GMs hands with budget constraints. Can't go over X. No! not even for a week! Kids have a value, don't exceed it. Stand up to the agents! Just do it for the good of baseball! There are owners is every sport who will fight for every scrap of advantage, bend any rule into a pretzel, do whatever it takes to win. Those owners don't live in Philadelphia. We're main line, we support the commish. If we win, it's nice.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.

Our payroll is like that of a small market team like Kansas City or Altoona.

Should have fired Gillick and Amaro back in 07 and got new owners who really want to spend money so we could get to the playoffs some year.

We have to trade for Soriano or backload the hell out of Ross' contract because we are going to need a few million for the trade deadline.

It doesn't matter if we backload, it's the AAV against the tax that kills us.

about the only way to salvage this offseason is for ross to be grabbed by someone else, followed by a miracle trade of kendrick for fowler, leaving just enough luxury tax cap room to bring in a more decent starter than lannan to compete with him and cloyd.

yeah, i''m getting desperate. if amaro gets ross or wells i''m going to have to resign myself to the fact that the almost-dynasty is over (barring a 1983 wheeze kids rerun this summer), leaving us staring at "rebuilding" long into the foreseeable future.... and i''ll to be forced to admit to trent, shore, and squire that they have been right about amaro''s suckiness (if not every specific example thereof) all along.

sigh...

Its not even about the dynasty being over, its about the key decisionmaker making consistently bad decisions. I hope that we get some surprises out of Wolever's 2011/2012 draft classes.

Or you could wait for the season to play out. Last year was a freaking disaster and we won 81 games. It's not stupid or crazy to think some of the question marks will go the right way this time

This time last year there was a lot of optimism, weren't we among the Vegas favorites? What's so different now? The Halladay injury is a major concern, but I think we're in better shape overall
