Former Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract Thursday with the Miami Marlins, plugging the final hole in the team's projected lineup following a payroll purge. The 37-year-old former all-star, who can earn an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Mariners, Orioles and Padres have contacted the Tigers about trading for Rick Porcello.
Morosi adds that the Mariners and Orioles are "more actively interested" than the Padres at this point. The Tigers are looking for "a right-handed outfield bat and late-inning bullpen arm" and "could obtain one or both by dealing Porcello." Detroit is also reportedly listening to offers for Drew Smyly.

What about Sizemore? Are his legs even attached anymore? Even in 2011 he showed good power vs RHP (.213 ISO). Could be a good option for the double platoon

I love him, but he's not going to be game-ready until halfway through the season, I think. Had surgery last month, IIRC.

He's still young; only 23. Was rushed to the bigs never had a chance to learn going through the minors. He has the arm. With a good pitching coach and a new environment he could turn it around. It all depends on how much the Tigers want for him as to whether or not the Phillies should move on him. Mayberry and Bastardo for him would be a thought provoker.

Hey, his career K/9 has been trending up, all the way to 5.46 in 2012! And in an incredibly pitcher friendly ballpark he has a lusty 11.3 HR.FB%

his groundball percentage has been above 50% every season. having butchers at every infield position isn't helping him. he's had BABIPs of .277, .307, .316, and .344 the last 4 seasons, its gotten progressively higher as the tigers have gotten progressively worse in the infield.

our current infield defense doesn't project to be great, so maybe its not an ideal fit. but he hasn't even come close to his physical peak. the tigers screwed him up after they drafted him, put him on a very restrictive pitch count and told him he had to pitch to contact and use a sinker. in high school, his fastball was 93-98 and he had a hard 12-6 curveball. he was a strikeout pitcher and they essentially neutered him. his xFIP has gone down each season: 4.27, 4.24, 4.02, 3.89 in 2012. his K per 9 has gone up slightly the last 2 seasons, but its still really low, because again, hes been told he has to pitch to contact and use a sinking 2 seamer instead of his 4 seam. hes only thrown his curveball 4% of the time in his major league career and it was his best weapon in high school behind his fastball.

his fastball velocity ticked up 2 full mph last year on both the 2 seam and 4 seam. he still throws his changeup too hard, but expose him to halladay, lee and hamels and see what happens.

he'd be an awesome #4 starter, and would benefit from the league switch. let lannan and kendrick battle it out for the 5th spot, with the odd man out moving to the bullpen

If you could get him for those two, sure. I think he'd cost a lot more than our crap fringe 25 guys though. What with the age, cost, arm strength, "potential"

Yup.

Read somewhere Tigers are considering trying to get some good upper level prospect for him. That would be tough for the Phils to pull off.

If we could swing Porcello, I think you put Lannan 5 and KK in the bullpen. Seems like that's where's more consistently successful; unless he plans on carrying the fire Chollys talk lit under his ass into 2013

I'm sure I'm in the minority (maybe a minority of one), but I'd rather have Bastardo than Porcello.

Well, there's something to like about a guy with a 14.09 K/9 rate and a 13.3 swingandamiss rate so I see your point.
