I can easily see DeFratus and Aumont settling into 7th and 8th inning roles, along with Bastardo. Lindblom would then take over the Clay Condrey Memorial role (or the Chad Durbun Memorial role, depending on how much you hate him). Then you fill out the other 2 spots from the loogies (Valdes, Horst, Diekman and Savery) and the righties (Stutes, Herndon, Rosenberg, Schwimmer). That's 13 guys with major league experience for 7 bullpen slots and most of them have had some success, even thought they've been erratic. If they could get Madson cheap then, sure, you do it. But even without another vet, I really think the bullpen will be a strength next year.

I can't imagine Madson wanting to come back here based on the rumors of last year's negotiations.

Do you think April is too early for a Roger Dorn night?

But then they will get horrible production at 2B. Chase is in the lineup either way, so it's either Galvis in the lineup with him or somebody else at 3B. Even with his stellar defense, I have trouble thinking they can't get better overall production (defense and offense together) than Galvis. I like the kid and all, but he'll hurt the offense a good bit while in there, and I don't think even his defense will make up for it. Plus, you most likely have worse defense at 3B with Utley there. I just don't see how this would make us better overall, unless they think they can get someone who can hit for 2B, which I kinda doubt.

fwiw, I wasn't saying that I thought Utley was broken, just that their actions could be a sign that they believe it (or a few other things)

Maybe you move Utley to third, and bring in somebody like Keppinger to play 2nd. I don't know, at least if you give it a try, you have options, and you can try to bluff San Diego when they try to rake you over the coals for Headley.

Is Keppinger an upgrade with Utley's inferior defense at 3B and Keppinger's terrible-compared-to-Galvis defense at 2B? Keppinger doesn't have much of a bat. He's having a good year, but it's above his recent career norms by a good bit and he's 32 y.o.

I'm just trying to figure out their thinking. I agree it's possible its a negotiating tactic, but I doubt they would risk Utley getting hurt fielding grounders at a new position if it was all a ploy.

If utley gets hurt fielding grounders there are bigger concerns.

It was Utley's idea. He must feel third would be better for him (and, then, the team) physically and/or defensively.

I'm not sure you can count on him to be ready in April, anyway, so the whole thing is probably a moot point from a roster perspective. We'll need two or three guys capable of playing significant time at 2B/3B.

next year is Utley's last year on his contract. He probably is looking for ways to extend his career if 2B is causing him too much trouble on his knees.

In part two of his Q & A with Steaks, Amaro basically said Mayberry is a part timer moving forward and that Galvis would have more defensive impact in the middle of the field than at third

At least we've now confirmed that Amaro isn't completely insane. If he didn't believe those things, I'd wonder what team he's been watching in 2012.

Sounds like they want Galvis at 2B with Utley at 3B.

Great, so the improvement in offense surely isn't coming from the 3B/2B combo. I wonder if Galvis will be the worst offensive player in baseball next year, or if his back will keep him from playing full time, or if he's so bad offensively without the steroids that he won't even be able to make the roster. Like I said, I really like the kid (albeit less after he tested positive), but I really hope they are going to be realistic about what he brings to the table right now.

Of course, what Amaro says and ends up doing may be two very different things. Honestly, I would rather give Asche a shot at 3B than have Galvis playing full time coming off a serious back injury without the juice. Though neither option is particularly appealing.

I think I'd rather get kicked in the balls right now rather than watch either of those options next year.

Jeez man, Galvis would be batting eighth with tremendous defense at a key position. If he's that horrendous at the plate they could use Frandsen. And presumably this approach saves our powder for an impact outfielder(s)

As for Asche, at least this approach keeps the door open to him, versus, say, trading for Ramirez

There are definitely a few holes to fill. I should add that my opinion of using Galvis at 2B might change depending how they fill the other holes. I don't want to be completely rigid about it. He is a hell of a glove man.

I think I may be more concerned about his back than most people. Back problems usually don't go away and he'll be playing a demanding position.

The player batting 8th is a part of the offense. The weaker that player is, the more you have to make up for him at the other lineup positions.

I never said anything about trading for ramirez, so I'm not sure where you got that.

I think it comes down to what Utley needs to do. We are on the outside. It may be that he's told them privately that he just can't play 2B every day. If that's the case, then they'll need to go the Galvis at 2B route and try to find the offense at the other positions.

MB, you're WAAAAAYYYYY overthinking this. There's nothing they "want" right now. Just seeing if they have options, like Barry said. (not the president, ours)
