Is this team really going to bench Juan Pierre right now? The only guy who legitimately seems to give a damn about what is happening every night? Let's start with replacing Polanco. It has to be done either way. We have the pieces to get Headley, so Rube should be trying to get after that. I'm even ready to overpay just to have a real third baseman to turn to every night. It's not going to replace the bullpen problems, but maybe we can expand it into a bigger deal and get Thatcher or Gregerson.

Just start trying to chip away at them until they submit to us. We have plenty to trade, and we need a third baseman about as badly as any team. Unless the plan is to trade Hamels for Olt and pieces and just let Polanco finish out the year.

polanco really sucks and is of no use to the padres. may is having a down year that takes a bit of the shine off. i like pettibone, but he's been hurt. franco is so far away. don't think that's an easy deal to spin for the padres.

Why would they want a free Polanco? Why would we give away Polanco for free? Utley needs days off/defensive replacement enough times to make Polanco useful if they are going to pay his salary anyway.
