I'm sort of convinced there are certain pieces they could sell and get a return on that really won't have a significant impact on their chances going forward (e.g. Blanton and Polanco).

Maybe something at the margin, a 1 WAR guy for the bench or bullpen. But the real gain would be to get under the cap I think.

Cool, now resign Hamels.

A pre-game show caller just told Amaro to trade Dom for Michael Taylor

Not sure if mentioned elsewhere, but Rangers top scout in attendance for todays game.

Should I start the Lee trade thread?

Taylor has had a good year at Sacramento and has been hot lately. of course he's old for his league. But you would think the A's would give him a shot at some point.

Dom has been doing better too. He is really important to the Phil's future in my view.

Heyman tweeting Lee could be option for Rangers if they can't get Hamels or Greinke

With who? 99% of Phillies fans would be totally cool with trading Lee if meant keeping Hamels

I don't know about that. Cole's Q rating is definitely on the rise, Lee's down some, but I think a plurality would think/say, "here we go again" with the sign one ace, get rid of one ace thing.

Possible exception being if it returned an impact bat.

Those people will shut up if the Phillies win. I'd be ecstatic if they traded Lee and got an impact bat and some good prospects for him. Don't get me wrong, I love having CLIFF LEE on our team and that morning when they signed him is one of my favorite baseball memories of the past few years... but that was probably the one move that I'd undo if I could at this point.

I hear ya. I was thinking the other day, the hindsight move was to give up Brown to get Halladay in 2009. But I wouldn't undo Rube's wheeling and dealing, which was a lot of fun and could have easily resulted in another WFC.

When I say "impact bat" for a 2012 Lee trade, I don't mean Olt. I think it would have to be a surer thing for the fans to accept that

Ahem. Not hindsight for all of us.

I know there are some who, as a matter of principle, don't want to give the Jays what they originally asked for (Drabek/Happ/Brown). But it's silly to lose a fantastic opportunity over a point of principle.

* * *

Think of it this way: Do you really want to look back at this moment and say: "Well, we didn't get Halladay, but we sure showed Riccardi that we wouldn't give in to his offer?" That's not even cold comfort.

Grote, could you please explain to me the obviousness of the "hindsight" move? We ended up getting Halladay, what does the Brown thing solve then?

Big picture, we wouldn't really have lost anything, unless you believe we wouldn't have won the 2009 pennant with Halladay.

I'd assume we still would have made the Oswalt trade, but by not paying $20M+ for Lee in 2011, we may not have made the Pence trade.

And as it stands now, you'd take D'Arnaud over Brown, no?

I didn't say "obvious," but that's the way I'd revisit things if I had to. But again, I'm not complaining -- it was a lot of fun and could easily have resulted in another title.

yea, but that bottom of the 10th inning encapsulates this season so well. Starts off bad, then gets comically awful in short order under ridiculous circumstances.
