turns 29 on 9/11.

was a 9 WAR player last year. yes. 9 WAR. is a 1 WAR player this year. huge range of outcomes from 2008-2010.

his defense was a big part of his value last year, but he also hit those 32 HR somehow, and posted a .402 wOBA

if you assume he has 4 more peak years (age 29-32) left, then a gentle decline phase, he'll be worth a big deal. but how the hell do you even know if you're getting a 9 WAR player, a 1 WAR player, a consistent 5 WAR player, or an incredibly erratic performer. you're actually probably getting the latter.

id definitely take him here, and i'd give him like $17m per. hes an elite defender and a great baserunner. his 2012 was pretty much ruined by injuries.

Dude's gonna have to prove a lot next year, maybe not even the best pitcher on his own staff
