Random FM Musings of Phillies Baseball

#6org makes some half-arsed argument that our 5 spot is the weaklink, but the WAR comparisons make that a lie. Apparently Hummus will have his lowest WAR's since his rookie season and Doc will regress by over 2 WAR.

It looks like most of the ace type pitchers are rated 5 or 5.5. The exceptions are Verlander, Kershaw and King Felix. Those three guys are young.

The Indians are 5th and the Giants are 8th and I didn't see the Braves.

Such is the way with projection systems. They mush most guys towards the mean. Young guys who were good recently have good ratings lime Fister and Masterson and Ubaldo. That doesn't really explain Hummus though. That one is a puzzler.

i think their league adjustments are fucked. three NL rotations in the top 10, five in the top 15, and the worst five in the majors are NL teams (on the 16-30 list)

Well, it also has Doug Fister being better than Cole Hamels.

Fangraphs would be 10x better if it was more like BR and just had the stats.

Maybe their CBP park factor is too generous

Yes. I think the Fangraph projection machine can't deal with a bandbox pitcher's park.

There are 21 players ranked higher than Hummus WARwise.

Guys like Scherzer, Baker, Pineda, Milone, Hudson (Daniel), Beachy, Romero, Morrow and Bumgarner are ranked the same.

So really what the projections say is that Hummus is no longer a top 10 pitcher in MLB but top 40...

ERA over 7 right now he's probably done. - 2.5 WARs right there.

How balanced is the National League field? When the analytics department of one NL club ran its projected numbers, it found only one team that will win 90 games: Philadelphia.

In 16 full seasons under the three-division format, only once, in 2006, did only one NL team win at least 90 games. (The Mets, with 97.) Back then the imbalance between leagues was so great that NL teams played .390 baseball against AL teams that year (104-163), depressing the overall win total. The league has averaged 3.6 90-win teams per year since 1996.
