It's like Bowen said though, he was smart and funny and had memorable lines. All forgotten now. Amazing how certain transgression are seen as so heinous that it wipes out anything you accomplished in life... Never got the Conlin hatred. I mean, anyone who ever saw him on Sports Reporters could tell he had a prickly personality, and I guess he rubbed some the wrong way with his military and literary references (many of which, I'll admit, eluded me). And yeah, apparently he could be a real jerk in online correspondence, although I suspect some of those correspondents brought it upon themselves. I had online interaction with Conlin, more than a decade ago, when I wrote him to inform him that some of us in the Philly.com forums had taken to calling Desi Relaford, then in the midst of a 31-error season, DesE-6.

Conlin wrote back that he loved it, and he subsequently used the "DesE-6" moniker in a column.

So I had only one, positive, brief interaction with the guy.

But as someone who has followed the Phillies and Philadelphia sports since the 1970s, I loved that Conlin had so much institutional knowledge of the Phillies. That's the main reason why I always read his columns - I loved the little tidbits about what Paul Owens said at the bar during the 1976 winter meetings, et al.

Yeah, he was old-school. So what? At least admit the guy knew a ton of Phillies lore. With his retirement and Phil Jasner's death, we've lost a lot of institutional knowledge in Philadelphia sports in the past year or so.

So I mourn that, even as I am horrified by what Conlin allegedly did.

Somehow his "institutional knowledge" (he covered them his whole life, he better have known something about them) doesn't seem to hold as much importance

I think I was trying to defend his writing, not his other actions.
