Also, the scranton/wilkes-barre yankees will play their entire season on the road and will be known this year as the Empire State Yankees. Eww.

I'm thinking mlb should want to squeeze as much baseball as possible in the northeast (and maybe the rustbelt)

So, really looking at frustrated Met fans as your potential fan base. But given the Mets financial issues, it seems rather likely that most everyone in baseball has an interest in not doing anything that would further damage that franchise. I don't think MLB wants to drive another team into bankruptcy if it can be avoided.

I don't think that there are that many Mets fans in NJ, just because they're further away and its a pain in the butt to get from Jersey to Flushing.

That said, sure, the Newark Rays aren't going to convert many Yankees fans, but maybe a family with kids who lives in Jersey takes their family to Newark instead of the Bronx since the trip is a lot closer and tickets are probably cheaper and you don't have to cross 2 bridges and pay an arm and a leg to drive. Maybe they realize that sure, getting to Yankee Stadium after work is pretty easy to do, but after the game ends at 10 or 10:30, you have to take the packed subway to Penn Station (45 minutes), then take the NJ Transit train to your car (say another 45 minutes), then drive home. You're not home to at least midnight. Instead, maybe you take the train to Newark after work, then after the game ends, you take the train again (but only 30 minutes since you're closer to home). You might be home by 11.

I doubt they ever surpass the Yankees, but in a generation, they might have a similar size fan base as the Mets and if its the Rays who win consistently, you'll get bandwagon fans too.

I don't know how the economics of a New Brunswick or Woodbridge team would be, but I didn't notice Middlesex county on any team's territory list. That team could draw from the Phillies fanbase as well and if a stadium is built close enough to an NJ Transit station, that would help draw commuters.

Good work by David Samson. What a piece of shit. Must be nice to have a step-father buy a major league team.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are renaming themselves the Empire State Yankees for this year, since they will not be playing in S/WB due to renovating Junior Veterans Stadium.

i like kevin goldstein, but his editor at BP really needs to pay more attention, because his top 20 prospect pieces have been littered with spelling/grammar/factual errors.

Cue lots of people complaining that work on Lackawanna County Stadium hasn't even started yet, the S/WB Yankees got rid of the S/WB in their name, and the county is still negotiating with the Yankees... perhaps NEPA will be minor league baseball-less next year.

yeah, he's in the running for 5th starter from what I read.

(nice guy, been talking to him since his time in Korea last season. he hooked me up w/ some of his old Phillies stuff, so that was pretty cool of him.)

Injury prone future bust Bryce Harper is out today with calf tightness. This is worse than general soreness I believe.
