It is, but the wildcard is still earned over 162 games. I used to think the best-of-five LCS was unfair. A one-gamer after spending six months making the postseason? I think that's cruel and unusual punishment.

yeah, but the wild card is a relatively new thing too, so idk. i hate the expansion, but i'm glad it's not a full round of playoffs for teams that wouldn't have been there pretty recently. i'm glad it's one and done and the real playoffs start like it's normal

The "travel" days are actually there so that the networks can get all the games on TV with as little overlap as possible.

Would you be better off getting the 2 seed this year? That way you get to open the best of 5 lds at home for sure, then take your chances with the lcs?

I think I'm the only one who likes this, mainly because 1) I'm already at peace with the playoffs being a crapshoot, so more variance is tolerable and 2) were spoiled now but I guess I can't shake the memories of those mid-2000s Phils teams. I remember thinking how awesome it would be to just get once

Don't 2 seeds also start on the road?

I don't know, I got confused reading that mess up thread. Probably.

The 2-3 format is dumb but whatever. The only real disadvantage is that it makes a sweep less likely. The chances of winning the series are the the same and the advantages gained from being the 1-seed trump the scheduling

Plus, great teams can win anywhere, as we know

One LDS in each league begins -- the series matching the No. 2 seed versus the No. 3 seed (i.e., the matchup that doesn't involve the wild-card teams). The No. 3 seed would play the first two games at home.

It could benefit the Phillies since they have a deeper rotation. Carpenter would've had to go on only 3 days rest last year in game 5.

It also means only the higher ranked team can clinch at home.

We all know by now that momentum shifts during playoff series' don't always have anything to do with whether the game is at home or away.

The minor league playoffs use the 2-3 format to save on travel, and it seems like a lot of the lower seeds end up winning, although you do have to account for call-ups and first-half division champs that suck in the 2nd half.

2011 minor league playoffs (team with HFA listed first)

Braves got 1-hit by Doug Fister (2 ip) and the Tigers, a single by Jordan Parraz (Phils draftee, never signed) in the 8th inning off Bootcheck.

Also the Red Sox beat Northeastern 25-0 behind two Cody Ross bombs.

It wouldn't have affected when Carpenter pitched, but it would've affected who their game 1 starter would be (we won anyway) and it might've used up their bullpen more (which might've helped us in game 2).

That and they would have a 50/50 chance of losing and we would've played the Braves instead.

I support the expanded playoff (you're not the only one, joe). Next year they'll fix the 2-3 format in the DS.

I don't mind the extra game going forward. In fact, I like it. One more team gets involved and it doesn't change the fact that a WC team will play the top division winner in the 1st full round. So really, it adds something without messing with the longer series. My only beef is the 2-3 thing this year. I see no reason that all the parties involved couldn't work it out with scheduling. It seems to me that they are just trying to save money and are using this as an excuse. It can't be that hard to make a few scheduling changes this far in advance. We put a damn man on the moon for pete's sake. :spam:

Less travel. Interesting. If MLB had balls, they'd go with a 1-4 format. That's how you really reward top teams.

It's kinda awesome that the "home team" in this scenario only has to beat Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee before going on the road.

At first I hated this, but the idea has grown on me. I like the fact that it's more important to win your division than ever.. at the same time I liked the playoff system the way it was. I guess we'll have to go down the road and see how it all plays out, but I don't hate this idea nearly as much as I did when it first came about.
