obviously drabek was a guy the jays had to get to sell it as a legitimate deal, but i always had the feeling d'arnaud was the guy they were really after.

tbh, i'm unsure if you are debating that stance or the fact that drabek was more valuable than d'arnaud.

As long as they're still broadcast on 1270 WLBR, your home for Phillies baseball in the Lebanon Valley.

Who cares who the center piece was. Drabek was a very highly regarded prospect. A lot of folks really liked D'Arnaud as well. Even Taylor was highly regarded at the time. For a while it looked like Taylor was a bust and Drabek was looking great. Drabek really tanked last year and Taylor is still trying to make it.

Meanwhile, D'Arnaud, when he has been healthy has been dynamite with the bat and his defense is reported to be very good too. Goldstein had D'Arnaud as a breakout candidate as a Phillie prospect and as a Blue Jay guy.

So it goes with prospects.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Perhaps, aside from martnarcy, and occasionally John[who has seen him play] there is no one on this board who has been a more consistent and outspoken supporter of Reggie Taylor, the very talented and wildly inconsistent CF at SWB. Well, I am not going to bore you with my upbeat appraisals of his talent and skills, he remains a 5 tool prospect. What I would like to do is dispell the notion that Reggie is having an awful year and has lost his prospect status....I have even read 1 poster suggest he should be removed from the 40 man roster. For those who are unaware...Taylor has not been terrible, he has been hurt...and now that he is again healthy...probably for about 3 weeks, he is again playing like the Taylor that dazzled people late in August last year and in the IL playoffs. It is not his fault that the Phils stubbornly insist that Taylor bat leadoff, he is less a leadoff hitter than Glanville, and we need not go there now.......what he remains is probably the fastest guy in our system, a gazelle in CF[Byrd, and I LOVE him] will never touch Taylor as a CFer, his arm is probably more suited for right field it so powerful...and his power remains so tantilizing, he is once again begining to stockpile doubles and triples, always his staple. We continue to banter his name as if it is necessary to rid ourselves of him.....why? I have never read that he is a trouble maker, a bit inconsistent in the concentration department....but that makes him unique? Now do I say keep him at all cots? Of course not...but I say to trade him now.....when his value is at its lowest would be a grievous and shortsided move, you don't sell stocks when they are low, you sell them when they are high.....or you don't sell. Please spare me the 40 man roster crisis, Reggie Taylor would be gobbled up in a nano second if we exposed him to the draft......he will remain very much a fixture on the roster. And......if my instincts don't suddenly fail me, we will be reading much about the Reggie Taylor exploits in July and August, he is now healthy and motivated...he has Glanville in front and Byrd behind...he must play well to insure a chance to play next year with the Phils....or insure that he is traded to a team in need of a CFer. I do know when to fold, I have stopped my push for Alex Giron, if you haven't noticed? But, Taylor is so much different, a guy we must not lose patience with, he is still only 24.....hardly a has been! Keep an eye on him in the coming months, i think you will like what you see!

I have always remembered when Arbuckle drafted Taylor and cautioned Phillie fans that Taylor would be a work in progress due to his limited baseball background in South Carollina. In fact, I think he will someday be a star, though NOT the lead off hitter that the Phils seem to want him to be. John has personally seen him play and continues to defend Taylor's progress. What bothers both of us the most is when uninformed fans compare Taylor to Jeff Jackson. Jackson was an athlete, Taylor is a baseball player. When Taylor grasps the strike zone, and I believe he will, he will be a guy who regularly gets double figures in doubles, HR's SB's and occasionally in triples. It will be fun to see if we are correct.

At the risk of overrating my sense of importance to this site[and compared to some marvels here I am extremely insignificant] I am quite sure people have been waiting for my response to the Reggie Taylor trade.....and for those of you new to this board, here is why! There has been no more unabashed Reggie Taylor fan on this site than me...I remain a fan of his and fully expect him to do well in Cinncinati but beyond that, here is why I abolutely HATE this trade....it continues a philosophy of Wades that will forever doom us to mediocrity, the giving up of potentially outstanding players for mediocre talent that will NEVER get better. Lets face it, when the dust settles it will be Mercado, Wade is obsessed with getting mediocre pitching that he feels can help NOW....witness the Wendell/Cook for Chen/Walker trade lst July at the expensive of players who have outstanding risk, but outstanding upsides also. Look, I learned along time ago that to really build a solid team you had to evaluate a player on what he would be if he became the best player he was capable of being, as opposed to looking at his downside....Wade does the exact opposite. If Taylor develops to his best, and many of still think that will happen, he will be an exciting player capable of hitting 20 HR, stealing 40 bases, and winning Gold Gloves in the OF, at his worst, he could have become a solid defensive replacement for Burrell, insurance in case we trade Glanville, and a guy that could grow into a solid MLer. At best, Mercado will be a mediocre lefty who will soon disappear from the seen, much like Cook did, and Cormier will, and Schourek did..and...well, you get the point! Another point I learned a long time ago after the Frank Robinson/Milt Pappas trade.several very wise GM's made the statement that it is almost NEVER a good idea to trade a hitter with potential for a pitcher with potential, 90% of the time the hitter will perfoem better, given his increased oppurtunities, less chance of injury, and greater chance of improving as he matures...Mercado will NEVER be what Taylor may become!!! And finally, here is my last take on this trade, and this is the one that I am sure will stir up much debate......as many of you know, I place much value in the psychological aspects of sports, the mental part of the game....and that goes for coaches as well as players! What does this tell all those coaches in the system who have deligently worked to make Taylor a better player, who thought they were all contributing to his someday becoming a star with the Phils...when he began playing well this spring, they must have felt that all that hard work was finally paying off...and then he is basically given away! What must Arbuckle be privately thinking, afterall, it was he who drafted Taylor and continued to insist that Taylor was a work in progress, and now his pick has been summarily cast aside...for what??? A roster spot for Mabry or Hollins..a LH nobody like Mercado. Mark my words, Reggie Taylor will be stealing bases and hitting doubles, triples and HR's in Cincy long after Mabry, Hollns and Mercado have left the seen and we will once again be left with our mediocrity, and probably NOT Arbuckle, who can't be thrilled to see such #1 picks like Eaton, Loewer and Taylor cast aside for guys who either don't want to play here[Ashby] or will not help us if they play here[Mercado]. I have given up all hope that Ed Wade will ever be a qualified GM, he has NO understanding of talent, how to make a trade, or how to build a roster...does he realize how foolish he makes himself look when he makes the statement about this trade coming together quickly....dah.....all over the league the other GM's just wait till the last minute to deal with Wade, knowing his inability to structure a roster or team will cause him to make a panic trade....Schill, Chen and Taylor were all made under duress at the last minute....friends, you will NEVER get best value when trading under duress..and once again, we are left knashing our teeth at what might have been....and stuck with what has come to pass...a roster of at least 7-8 guys who are not better than guys we gave up to keep them...and the beat goes on!

Yes, I hold Bowa equally responsible...I think his style and attitude will cause us to lose many players who don't play his way...by the way, anyone notice that Reggie Taylor homered today in Cincy..it has already started...

Beating a dead horse is not my goal but....did anyone see Reggie Taylor play last night? I did..and his role was exactly the role that he could have played with us, he replaced Dun in LF late in the game, made a couple of important catches late in the game, looked confident, talented....and young[and thats a good thing!] By comparison, Mercado looked like Yorkis Perez, Trevor Miller and any other pathetic lefty we have thrown out there over the past several years! By the way, Taylor singled in his only plate appearance the night before.....this is a trade we will long rue!

If Wade is the guy who makes the trade of Valent...then we are probably worse off in two areas, one, it means Valent is gone and two, it means Wade is still on the job. As with Reggie Taylor, Eric Valent will show us through his play who is right or who is wrong. I promised I would not bring up Taylor anymore and I won't..he has shown through his play at Cincinnati that those of us who thought he was a ML outfielder have been proven right. He is better now than any CFer we have used all year and would have been a welcome addition to our team considering his power, speed and defensive ability. You can continue to bash him for his inability to draw walks...he is what he is...but to say he was not a major league player capable of significantly helping us is to continue to deny the facts of his play this year. And keep in mind he is a rookie, and promises to get better with experience....Valent will be the same way.

Who says he is a so-so prospect, that is baloney! He is a so-so prospect like Brian Giles, Rusty Greer and Trot Nixon. I am tired of seeing this Valent is a 4th OFer mantra like it is bound to become a self fulfilling prophesy. It is attitudes like this that will get Valent traded and we will watch from a distance as he becomes a solid major league regular. Is he a super star? Of course not! Will he have a very solid career in the big league? Absolutely! As much as I am sold on Reggie Taylor, I am more sold on Eric Valent...he had every bit the power in college that Troy Glaus had. Is he as good....no. Is he being underrated? I think so.....

He had a .918 OPS in 2010 for the Lancaster Barnstormers. Never count out Reggie.

Yeah the AM signal blew in my office. I'm rull glad.

Some were saying WIP streamed the Sunday games online last year, as well, but I'm guessing MLB wouldn't allow that for all games.
