Sign Hamels to extension.

Can he actually play SS full time? Not a lot of experience there, even in the minors.

I don't know but I loved his rendition of the Star Spangled banner in The Naked Gun.

Howard's rehab. Amaro said Ryan Howard is scheduled to begin some weight-bearing activities in the middle of the month on his surgically repaired left Achilles tendon.

Howard suffered that injury in his season-ending at-bat during the Phillies' Game 5 loss to St. Louis in the division series. He is currently wearing a protective boot.

"He seems to be progressing OK," Amaro said. "When he starts doing more weight-bearing stuff, we should get a better indication of what the time frame will be [for his return]. Hopefully by the middle of this month, he'll start doing those weight-bearing things."

It has been estimated that Howard will be sidelined until at least May.

It's unclear how the Phillies plan to replace Howard if he is not ready to begin the season, but recently acquired Ty Wigginton is probably the primary option right now. Wigginton has started 114 games at first base over the last two seasons with Baltimore and Colorado.

Philly.com article on Franzke and LA, w/ guest appearance by Wheels

Chris Wheeler, who has worked for 35 years as a Phillies broadcaster, says you can't fake the odd-couple friendship of Franzke and Andersen.

"There are people in this business who have insufferable egos and hog everything."

There's been a dozen articles about how good LA & Franzke are, but I've never read a single positive article about McCarthy. Surely they're over the idea that the fans just have to get used to him, right? This has to be his last year. /wishful thinking

From Starks winter meetings article

But when we asked the folks in our poll to name the player they thought was most likely to get traded at these winter meetings, we got 10 different names, from Martin Prado and Carlos Quentin to Maicer Izturis and Ben Francisco.

Would make sense with wiggy and nix now phillies.

I'm a little surprised they didn't work an extra "Y" in there someplace.
