Diamondbacks hold the tiebreaker and azrider is really pissed in that scenario.

i should wait a couple of days but i can't resist. kendrik 12th in the league in era among pitchers with 110+ innings. ahead of notable names like hudson, zimmerman, bumgarner, latos, saunders, hanson. some of those guys had low babips too. i guess this sort of weirdness is par for the course in a season in which two teams blow gigantic wildcard leads at the same time.

i still want blanton as my backup starter in the playoffs.

I can't believe there are people on this board afraid of the Cardinals. The Cardinals!! OH NO not a Game 1 matchup of Halladay/Edwin Jackson or a Game 2 matchup of Cliff Fucking Lee and Jamie Garcia. Seriously, get a grip. We should be praying for the Cardinals to make it.

Happy Ending Specialist.

Ichiro has been in Clearwater for the past few summers. My son has been at the Threshers camp for the past three years and he's been there every time. I"ve seen him quite a bit during Threshers games. My guess is that he came up with the other callups after the minor season ended.

No, he was added to the training staff in March. link

I guess he got the call up this year, then, from Clearwater.

Good for him, he was a nice guy around the kids.

I honestly prefer this over any combination of Brian Anderson, Joe Simpson and John Smoltz

1995 Braves vs 2011 Phillies starting pitching
Maddox 262 ERA+, 7.87 K/BB, 0.811 WHIP
Glavine 139 ERA+, 1.92 K/BB, 1.248 WHIP
Smoltz 135 ERA+, 2.68 K/BB, 1.235 WHIP

Halladay 164 ERA+, 6.29 K/BB, 1.040 WHIP
CLIFF LEE 161 ERA+, 5.67 K/BB, 1.027 WHIP
Hamels 141 ERA+, 4.39 K/BB, 0.981 WHIP

I was calling for big things from Hamels and he delivered: career best ERA/FIP/xFIP/SIERA.

Career low HR/9, career high GB%

Surprisingly decent Gonzo piece on Charlie, with this nugget

Manuel told a story then. He was in the minors way back when, playing for the Twins' instructional league team. Billy Martin was managing the big league club and stopped by to take a look at some prospects. Manuel slid into second during the game, slid in hard. The second baseman didn’t dig it and took a swing. Manuel dropped him. Today, you might get blackballed or labeled a problem for something like that – a player to be avoided.

“Billy Martin was the first guy to say something to me after that,” Manuel recalled. “He said, ‘kid, you’ll make my team.’ And I made his team.”

Charlie comes across as affable. Yet there's an anger in him. I don't think I'd want him mad at me.

Random weather update for this weekend. Still think it's going to at least be cloudier and cooler than NWS is predicting and I really would not rule out some scattered showers/drizzle. It'll be pretty breezy, as well.

For reference, the NWS says it's going to be mostly sunny with a high of 64. AccuWeather says mostly sunny with a high of 62.

It wasn't so much the players I was thinking about. Rather sometimes you get a sense that Charlie is mad at the world--sort of like Billy Martin but with a lot more self control and without the alcoholism. (To be honest, I really don't remember how Billy treated the players, other than his feuds with Reggie Jackson.) Look at the press conference from a few days ago--he sounded mad there.

I think this is the greatest article I've ever read about the Phillies, baseball, sports, or Philadelphia. As someone who grew up in Philadelphia, went to school in West Philly, and spent the last 15 years working downtown, this brings a little tear to my eye. Gary Smith is a rock star.

If I wasn't already in love with Philly from 3,000 miles away this article would've sealed the deal.
