Phillies thoughts of the random persuasion

Is this something he had been playing with and just aggravated it this afternoon? Or was it a new injury?

And can someone (Ruben?) tell Charlie to take the people limping around in games that don't matter out of the game when they start limping and not five innings later?

jerz i agree with your earlier statement in the other thread and said as much on twitter to DHale, who didn't reply. If the games "are meaningless" then why are Rollins, Utley, Victorino, Pence, Ruiz and other regulars playing? Why not start Gload, Moss, Valdez, Mini, and the like every night instead? If the goal is to get guys rested/relaxed/recharged for the playoffs, they should get a few days off completely. Its like we're in the middle of the road here. And like Myiagi says, walk in middle of road get squashed like grape

I disagree with this article a lot.

Pence has been better than who ever we were platooning in RF before the trade. The team is more likely to score more runs/prevent more runs with him than without him, and the drop off in the production of those around him doesn't change that.

Yeah, it's pretty weird for it to have gone from "Pence can't help Howard" to "the overall lineup hasn't produced more with Pence."

The lineup before Pence was added was basically our everyday lineup (I.E. everyone was in good health).

I think I read Pence has played with the regulars (Yim, Vic, Utley, Howard, Glue, Ruiz, Polly) only four times since he was added to the Phillies.

They haven't improved? Ok, except they would have been a lot worse without him and with Brown in there dropping balls every other inning. That is a really really dumb article.

The Phillies are also a lot better with Valdez and Schneider the lineup than they are with Utley and Chooch

In order to make the argument the article makes, don't you at least have to do some analysis of what the Phils' production and record would have been had they not acquired Pence?

Is that article typical of the quality posted on TGP?

The macro stats back it up but on a micro level it's pretty absurd.

that article is absolutely pathetic. I'm not signing up with a SBNation account to tell him though. It's assinine. Because we had a terrific record before and the same terrific record after means he hasn't had an impact? Maybe we've been able to sustain what some think may have been an unsustainable pace because of his acquisition. He's production in right has enabled us to overcome some real slumps and injuries from the rest of the lineup. "whatever dude!"

I think the inclusion of the last 4 post-clinch games is a poor oversight on DSC25's part.

On September 10, 2011, the Phillies beat the Brewers 3-2 in 10 innings to essentially secure HFA throughout the playoffs.

They've lost ten games since that point, with the majority due to lackluster effort since they had, I don't know, a fucking twelve game lead in the division.

Whatever.

Still think it's amazing that the Phils have everything locked up and the rest of the NL is still days away from getting a second playoff team to just clinch a spot...

Sure, he's put up better numbers than the previous right-fielders. Here's a basic comparison of the Phillies' right-field production in the 49 games before Pence and the 49 games with Pence.

Code: Select all
Right Field  AVG  OBP  SLG   HR RBI
Without     0.227 0.325 0.372 5 17
With        0.325 0.391 0.539 9 28

Doesn't this disprove the entire premise? RF production WAS better, other positions were worse. W-L stayed the same because of this. You could argue that since we won by 12 games, we didn't need the addition of Pence, but to say he added nothing is just stupid.
