It's nothing different than he did before he got sick. And it's not about him being wrong. It's him saying, "not even close" as if he knows and you are asking a stupid question. He's already invested in an idea and he'd rather be a knee-jerk jerk defending it than wonder if something he assumed to be true is not correct.
