Well, this didn't happen, which in a roundabout way leads me to ask, why did the Phils prefer to have Carpenter on the major league roster instead of Grilli?

Because Rube thinks two steps ahead and would rather Aaron Heilman than Jason Grilli

That was great. I liked how in the 1st at bat, Joe Buck kept his dialogue to a minimum. Let the camera pan to every single Phillies players face in between pitches, and really caught the intensity of the top of the 9th.

That wonderful sound is the combination of pure joy and also the largest collective sigh of relief I think I've ever heard... I know I didn't scream at all at first. Manly tears. Man, I'm going to go watch the WS DVD now.

Also I'll never forget Lidge for that one magical season. It was more than worth it for that.

That first pitch was a fastball-slider according to Tim McCarver.

Hey, I think this thread title has new relevance.

My heart still goes up into my mouth on that ball by Zobrist, and I still don't think Hinske swung at strike two, but watching that again really did make my day.

Fox replays don't help much showing the angle that confirms nothing. The audio from the Rays side is pretty funny though on that swing. They're pissed.

Re-posting and adding to what I posted this on the Baez thread about Lidge and velocity:

karn wrote:^ can i get a fact check on that? i genuinely dont remember how fast / not fast he threw last year

Here are his fastball velocities for the past four years:

Image

The last two months of the season his fastball hovered around 90 MPH. During that time he had 25 Ks in 24.2 innings, 10 BB, 11 hits, .386 OPS against, 17 saves and 1 blown save (balk in SD).

I didn't realize that his slider speed also was historically low last year, especially at the end of the year. I guess that makes sense because it needs to be slower than the FB and the FB speed dropped. He was able to throw it slower but still make it drop, which is surprising.
