That's the theory I believe. Bill James named him the "Clutch Hitter of the Year" in 2009.
James has a specific definition for a clutch plate appearance and I'm not sure what it is. But Howard hit .357 with 12 homers and an .810 slugging pct. in clutch situations in 2009. He was the clutchiest hitter by far that season.
In his career through the 2009 season he had 435 Clutch Plate Appearances and had 48 homers.
