Steve Carlton was pretty good and all...

But in 1971, his last with the Phillies, Rick Wise had a 123 ERA+.

And a 102 OPS+, with a 6 (!) home runs.

In case you are wondering, the rest of the Phillies 1971 regular lineup included guys with OPS+es of 78 (Roger Freed, RF), 72 (Oscar Gamble, LF), 67 (Larry Bowa, SS), 64 (Denny Doyle, 2B), and 14 (R.I.P. John Vukovich, 3B)

Cole scoffed at the notion he might miss his next start.

In case you missed it, we had the best record in baseball at the end of last season

Best record in baseball with largest division lead right now.

Domonic Brown has a 118 OPS+, and that's with a .500 BABIP on line drives.

SI are running an article on the thief Morton: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/w ... =hp_t12_a1

The whole thing reads like its some giant coincidence that Morton does everything the same as Doc from his walk to and from the mound to thew way he dresses. I really hope that scrub gets shelled out of baseball.

Most Phillie fans were pretty upset about that trade. Wise was a big hero -- no hitter and two home runs in that game vs. the Reds; Really good pitcher and one of the team's better hitters.

The '71 team was interesting because they had some good young talent like John Briggs; Larry Hisle; Don Money; Oscar Gamble and Greg Luzinski. They also had Schmidt and Boone and Ruthven and Christenson in the pipeline.

But they traded Briggs; Hisle; Money and Gamble. And they also had a lot of young hot shots like Joe Lis; Roger Freed (Minor League Player of the Year); and Can't Miss Mike Anderson who never panned out.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

Money was made expendable by Schmidt. Why were those other guys traded?

Money was also a huge disappointment. He was the centerpiece of the Bunning deal and he flopped with the Phils. He blossomed in Milwaukee.

The Phils, for some reason, traded all their black players away during the late 60s/early 70s. Ferguson Jenkins; Grant Jackson; Alex Johnson; Dick Allen of course. Briggs; Gamble; Hisle (although Hisle was a legitimate disappointment). I remember it being an issue at the time. They even gave away Tony Taylor.

I remember it was really weird and turned me off to the way they were doing things.

Paul Owens became GM in 1972. I guess his predecessor was a racist?

John Quinn. He came from the Braves who had lots of black players in the 50s when most teams didn't. I don't think he was a racist necessarily. He might have thought the Phils' group lacked the necessities or something. Or maybe it was the manager too. Yeah, I guess that was kinda racist but it was a weird time.
