Roberto Alomar made one of the best catches I've ever seen in the 1993 World Series.

If you type a curse word into the baseball reference search field you get a special result. I learned this from entering "bastard" to search for Bastardo.

Just how bad will the post-apocalypse Astros be?

They'd need to go no better than 6-48 the rest of the way to break the Mets' record of 120 losses in a year.

If they played in the NL or AL East, instead of the NL Central, I'd say they'd have a shot at it.

How is Michael Bourn's WAR so freaking high. Bourn has a career .697 OPS but his WAR is like 1 higher than Pence each of the last 3 years. Is he THAT good on defense and base running?

It depends on what WAR you use I guess (From BP's transaction analysis):

Pence still looks good by more advanced metrics, however, as he has been worth 12 Wins Above Replacement Player since the 2008 season started. Compare that to other right-handed outfielders on the market like B.J. Upton (10.3), Carlos Quentin (9.7), Josh Willingham (9.4), Ryan Ludwick (9.2), and Michael Bourn (8.6), and you can argue that the Phillies got the best of the bunch.

Since 2008.

Also, Bourn bats lefty.

phatj, Bourn's career OPS is .697 compared to Pence's .817. His defense isn't THAT good. Let's get real.

I posted this in the other thread, but Bourn's 2011 BABIP, .381, is 40 points better than his career average. No one has brought that up in their analysis, but theyve quickly pointed to Pence's BABIP.

Bourn is a great defender and a great baserunner. If his BABIP dips, he becomes a .330 OB guy with no power.

Well, yeah, Bourn is having his best season by far. OPS + for Bourn during his career is: 86; 57; 97; 90 and 117 this year.

Pence is: 129; 105; 116; 113; 130 and 132 this year.

Bourn's baserunning and defense makes him a valuable guy in CF if he's hitting around league average. He gets on base but has no power. The Phillies have a CFer who hits really well and plays good defense and is a good baserunner. Adding a corner RH hitting OFer who can play defense and throw well and runs well and hits well above league average adds quite a bit of value to the club.

Bourn would actually be a 4th OFer on this team.

Oh, so how good is it?

You forget that the replacement level for a CF is lower than for a RF. So between hitting decently for a CF for his career and being really good and defense and baserunning, it doesn't seem farfetched to me at all. One other thing - Bourn has hit mostly leadoff, so he's gotten more plate appearances, helping him accumulate additional value.
