What the story doesn't tell you is that the Mets stood to gain at least 4 times the value of what they were paying Bonillia because they had invested it with Madoff. They werent thinking that they were going to get Butt raped in the deal. So good for them. And the haters are going to hate. Bobby has about 30 million reasons now to love all his haters including this ridiculous piece of trash writing the story.

Bonilla took his the $5.9M owed him deferred for 10+ years at 8% interest, which was a good deal for him at the time and the Wilpons would take that $5.9M and hand it over to Madoff for 15% returns and everyone wins, right? Well, except for the Mets and the Wilpons.

Damn, that is some kind of hatchet job on a guy just collecting what was owed him on a contract the team willingly signed.

Forget the Wilpons' expected returns -- this was a sure-fire PR disaster.

So there's a story in today's NYT that in 2001 the Mets looked into buying fraud insurance for their Madoff stake. So much for any claim they didn't suspect it might have been a Ponzi scheme.

If true, that would seem pretty damning in front of a jury. However, the article does a poor job (i.e., no job) of explaining whether fraud insurance is something that is common in the investment world. I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean billionaires don't use this frequently

fred wilpon speaks to the new yorker

• Shortstop Jose Reyes will not be getting a super-huge contract from the Mets. "He thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money," Wilpon said, referring to Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. "He's had everything wrong with him. He won't get it."

• On right fielder Carlos Beltran, Wilpon refers to Beltran's huge postseason with the Houston Astros in 2004 and says: "We had some schmuck in New York who paid him based on that one series. He's sixty-five to seventy percent of what he was."

On whether the franchise might be snakebit, Wilpon makes another pointed Beltran reference. Author Jeffrey Toobin writes: "At one point, I mentioned to Wilpon the theory that the Mets might be cursed. He gave a sort of half laugh, and said, 'You mean' -- and then pantomimed a checked swing of the bat. Any Mets fan (I am one) would understand the reference. The Mets took the 2006 National League Championship Series to a seventh game against the Cardinals."

In the game Wilpon refers to, Beltran took a called third strike from Adam Wainwright to end it.

I just read the article about the article on ESPN. How big of an asshole is this guy? Reyes not getting Crawford money makes sense, but the way he goes about saying things just makes him seem like an incredibly bitter old man. But I guess thats what you have to expect from the Mets at this point.

Clearly Wilpon is trying to establish he's an idiot for purposes of the Madoff litigatioj.

RE: Wright

Since his career season in 2007, Wright has pretty consistently gone downhill. His defense has been fucking awful, he's striking out a lot more, hitting fewer LD/more GB etc.

05-07 he had a line of .314/.396/.534 141 OPS+. 24.4 PA/HR
08-11 so far his line has been .291/.375/.489 131 OPS+ 28.1 PA/HR

That second line includes a ridiculous BABIP magic year in 2009.

.311/.205/.757 on GB/FB/LD respectively versus .263/.162/.750 for his career.

If you take out 2009, his PA/HR drops to 23.1 which says a lot about the kind of hitter he's become.

I'm not saying Wilpon is wrong, but what a fucking dumb thing to say about a guy you might be trading in two months

Sounds like a man who knows he's going to be forced to sell his team very soon, so he no longer cares what the players think of him.
