Moreover, the one potential bright spot — the start of games at Citi Field, the selling of tickets, the sale of hot dogs and beer — appears clouded as well. One person close to the team said that advance ticket sales for the 2011 season were going so poorly that a sense of panic had begun to take hold in the team’s front office.

After saying they would not be interested in selling part of the team, the Mets are now searching for a minority partner, but who would jump in while still learning just how damaged this franchise is?
....Maybe the best suggestion for keeping the Mets solvent and relevant came from my friend and colleague Stan Isaacs, the longtime Newsday columnist, still thinking impishly in retirement. Isaacs has suggested the Mets open stock to the public, creating an I.P.O. of the heart.
By pooling quarters found under sofa cushions and cashing leftover money on subway cards, Mets fans could participate in the Green Bay Packer-ization of their stricken franchise....
