DSP's TV Thread (with J.E. Magee) [OT]

I'm sort of mixed on it. The pilot was terrific, the show then went wayyy south until the Nevada Day two parter. Those episodes leading up to the Christmas one were terrific. But, since then, it's been really middling. The whole Danny/Jordan love thing is weird. Simon is black we get it. What is the point of Tim Busfield? Great actor, useless part. I know it's your boy Sorkin J, but I'm not sure what can be done to save the show.

With that said, NBC is in love with it. The audience concentration is elitistly high. If NBC's pilots fail....there's a good shot Studio 60 could get another season. More likely for 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights, but still. Maybe.

I like the guy but ain't no one perfect, I like Busfield as an actor and character, but again, Sorkin has too many characters and not enough air time for all of them, the west wing was the same way...sports night seemed to limit it to a good number (basically 6) of characters...

As for love stories...a few things about aaron sorkin writing tv that i've discovered
1. He sucks at writing female characters
2. He sucks at writing romances
3. He writes himself into corners sometimes (i.e. the MS thing on TWW and I believe the FCC thing on Studio 60 which seems at least slightly more planned out than the MS thing did)

I don't understand the danny/jordan thing, unless danny DOES have a savior complex like Jordan implies but he hasn't demonstrated one until now. I don't understand the need for the pasty blonde girl in charge of illiterate programming following those idiotic rules (does that 48 rules thing actually exist?) as a 'challenge' to Jordan. I don't understand demonstrating jordan as one of the most resistant tv execs...i mean it is about making money isn't it? Simon trying to make Darius his bitch and 'educate' him about being black in comedy is pretty stupid as well (in my opinion)...at least I like how they are having darius stand up to simon.

There's a lot of story lines I don't find done well but I still like the writing itself, I still laugh quite a bit, but i just don't care about the characters the way i did on the sorkin west wing and sports night. Like I said, of the 3, his worst tv endeavor, and possibly the reason why is that I think it's also his most personal endeavor...

Maybe he'll wind up in rehab again with Matthew Perry.

I don't find it hysterical, i find it entertaining (they got rid of one of the more annoying characters, but kept her husband, and seem to have realized they had too much cast) and it makes me laugh when I watch richie velch, dudes got timing...maybe the fact that based on the fact that they are main line kids and the timing it means they went to the same elementary school (merion) that i did, around the same time i did, lends my affection to the show...i wouldn't miss it, but i like it better than 2 1/2 men these days (and have you met ted is getting funnier since they now realize more barney = more funny)

are you talking about the Blonde news chick ? I also noticed the ex football player has not been on in recent weeks. They also cut out the gay guys boyfriend. The gay humor has been surprisingly funny.

Yeah, holly higgenbottom (or whatever her name was) is gone from the show, but her straight/gay husband will be on the valentines day episodes...i noticed they cut out the boyfriend too, one of the best scenes of the show so far though has been when holly was reporting in the hurricane and getts smacked by a stop sign and the couple just can't stop watching it over and over.

Yonk iisn't part of the cast as much as a recurring character, they probably can't pay him for every episode...the elimination of holly means we won't see fern killing holly, which could have been funny.

I actually thought the gay boyfiend was funny as is Holly's husband. It was also funny when we saw Holly's dad was just like her husband. I hope the show makes it through the year and is given another chance next year. I assume the ratings are not all that great.

Another good Heroes last night. We're still in the setting up phase, but the characters are engaging enough that it's still good tv.
Anybody else doing the whole primatech.com thing? I got an email update from them about bennet's computer files, and it looks like they're introducing a new hero. Definately worth checking out.

Yup, his login on the site is Bennet, and that seems better than calling him Horn Rimmed Glasses.

No i meant the 'new' hero - clares birth father, who from the preview last night is still alive...

This show seems, however, to be 'too' coincidental for me these days, too much 'fate/destiny' interlinking interweaving of lives thing...it doesn't feel like an organic coming together as much as i think it should be.

If Hiros father is Linderman, the show officially jumps the shark.

Oh crap. Sorry about that.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT KIDDIES
No, the new hero is a kind of hot israeli chick named Hana Gitelman. She used to work for some shadowy organization, separate from bennet's. She can intercept and manipulate any form of wireless or electronic communication and has military training. In one of the photos, she's holding some sort of sub machine gun and looks ready to rock.

I don't think Hiro's father will be Linderman. George Takei only signed on to do 2 or 3 episodes this season. They said he'll play a larger role in season 2 though, so who knows. I know what you mean about the fate/coming together, but I think there's more to it than that. I'm betting that someone is herding heroes together. Possibly someone with a completed version of Dr. Suresh's program is gathering Heroes in NYC, while Benett seems to be stopping them from gathering. Just my take on it.

No - Hiro knows Linderman's name. If you meant "Claire", I think it makes sense, not that it's silly. I fully expect to find out that Sylar is a minor bad guy, and that there is a bigger one out there who has to be Linderman.

You have to admit, you've been resentful of Heroes from the start. All stories are built on coincidences, and it's not possible to make a superhero anything that isn't a "rip off" in some way of some other thing that's come before it (unless you are just buying the existing property like X-Men, Superman, Iron Man, etc). Coincidences also could mean something in the end - if everyone is tied to Linderman somehow (for example), he could be the cause or guiding factor in everything, not the other way around.

I doubt Hiro's father is Linderman. Linderman wouldn't offer them plane tickets to Japan. He isn't looking to collect heroes. Yet. I think his motives will continue to be shrouded and we won't see him for some time. Linderman might not be a bad guy. If they're clever, they'll turn everything on it's head.

I haven't been resentful, I just don't think it's praiseworthy - that's all - it's not original or inventive, it's derivative...i enjoy it quite a bit (cause i'm a fan of the things of which it's derivative of)...i think it receives more priase than it should if people who were praising it so much weren't such snobs when it comes to the source material from which heroes is derived.

On the topic of Extras, although this season has produced many funny moments, I'm starting to really have trouble believing that Andy would keep that utter idiot as his agent and, to a lesser extent, that moron woman as his only friend. Nearly all his moments of embarassment come from the sheer boneheadery of those two, rather than from any believable (and therefore, relatable) situation. It's starting to really ruin the humor for me. I could get past just the friend (what's her name, Molly?) but it's inconceivable that Andy would tolerate his agent.
