It's the sign of the times. For the first time in almost 30 years, NBC won't have a new comedy series on its fall schedule. And, in a hint of the new direction the broadcast networks will be taking in the face of audience demand for as many originals of their favorite series as possible, NBC's top comedies "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl" will produce 30 and 28 episodes, respectively, next season.
NBC is set to unveil its fall schedule Monday in New York following down-to-the-wire negotiations that secured the return of two veteran NBC series -- drama "Law & Order" and comedy "Scrubs" -- both of which had had potential suitors, TNT and ABC, respectively. "Law & Order" has been picked up for 22 episodes, "Scrubs" for 18.

"Heroes" will be back for 24 new episodes, which isn't unusual. But executive producer Tim Kring will also create six episodes of origins stories about new "Heroes" with an entirely new cast. Reilly said he anticipated that the companion series would most likely run after the regular "Heroes" season ends, and there will possibly be a viewer voting contest to get the most popular new character onto the regular show for its third season.
