utley was blocked b/c Polanco was a stubborn space cadet. howard could've been dealt for players that would've gotten them over the hump but no-trade wouldn't pull the trigger.

You mean Polanco wouldn't play third?

nope. he said as much. it's why he was traded.

He'd played third here since 2002. Citation, or it didn't happen.

you should get a citation for not knowing this.

if it's so well known then post a source. People have always been saying that about Polanco not wanting to play 3rd and it's bullcrap.

Utley and Howard were not kept in the minors "way too long." Look at their minor league careers. Utley spent more than a year in AAA but he also skipped AA. Howard played 80 games at AAA. Yeah, maybe they were blocked, but they weren't wasting away down there or anything.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

I can't believe anyone is even debating a guy who said they should have traded Howard to get us over the hump.

i never said that, i'm sick of people trying to posthumously credit wade for the team's current success by making it sound like letting utley and howard languish in the minors was part of some nonexistent plan of his. he was an awful GM, his 8 years w/ the phillies w/ no playoff appearance was a testament to nothing other than monty's loyalty, which was so blind that it bordered on insouciance. "when all else fails, do nothing" pretty much sums up his tenure.

he's done a better job turning the astros into our farm system than he ever did w/ the phils farm system while he was here.

joe torre would be "curious" to rejoin the muts as skipper. talk about bringing his managerial career full-circle...

for me the utley story isn't complete without pointing out that his development very likely was delayed by at least a year by the ill-advised attempt to convert him to 3b as part of the game of chicken being played with rolen.

Oh... I forgot about that, if I ever even knew it. Actually, I don't remember that at all... not that i doubt you, it obviously just changes my thinking. Somewhat.

i'm with the others here.
i'll completely on board with giving wade more blame than credit, but i think your polanco argument is way off base. ironically, i find that the way the bell-polanco situation was handled is part of the argument that wade deserves blame rather than credit. not only did the phils under his management delay utley by a year by trying to move him to 3b while negotiating with rolen, but they also compounded the error by failing to see that they would have been better off dumping sunk-cost bell and playing polanco and utley. but bell was a proud wade fa acquisition, so that couldn't be done. wade and phillies pravda excused themselves by making their usual unfair use of polanco's perfectly normal honest answers to question of what base he prefered, and whether he preferred staying put over moving around. they twisted every word coming out of players mouths for such purposes in those days.

They like Gardner and Swisher is useful. They have to keep DH open so Posada and the other old guys can play there occasionally.

Gardner isn't a fulltime LFer really though. You honestly think they wouldn't prefer Swish, Granderson, WERTZ over Gardner, Granderson, Swish?

Well, they'd probably prefer Crawford over Werth in either case, but I think they want to have some sort of payroll budget, especially since they'll offer Cliff Lee a shit ton of money too.
