"For me to complain about the deal the Phillies just made would be ludicrous"

But he's about to cry that they didn't get Halladay.

This is really what does it for me in this trade, we have a great chance to replace Knapp with the two picks in 2011. So the trade is essentially a year and a half of Lee for Carrasco, Donald and Marson, three guys that probably wouldn't have had a chance to make an impact for the Phils anyway over the next 2 years.

Pedro is at least a week away from being able to pitch for us, right? That buys you a little time to evaluate him (and Moyer) and see what's what. I'd hold tight.

Does Moyer retire if they send him to the pen? They really aren't thinking of sending Happ to the pen are they?

Well, you can call me any name you want. I still think Halladay is better and has more value. I like the deal, had Halladay never been a possibility I would be elated like the rest of you, but I can't help but wonder what having Doc Halladay would have meant to this franchise the next 2-5 years? If Drabek becomes Cole 2.0, I'll happily acknowledge all you sooth-sayers... but Doc is the real thing. And I'm not sure I wouldn't have overpaid to secure the right to have him pitch for my team.

I like Lee, don't get me wrong. It's a big upgrade and a big statement to the entire team, fan base and national mediots... but I like Doc more. I remember the hype on Jim Wright, lots of pitchers have been hyped in the minors... heck, most of you here were Carassco crazy last year... we just don't know. What we do know, is Roy Halladay is about as good as it gets for SP in MLB and was there for the taking... just sayin....

I'm really having trouble even processing how you can't fucking love this deal.

The gulf between the value of what we would have had to give up for Doc vs. what we actually did give up for Lee, plus the $8 million or so we're saving, seems like it dwarfs the gulf in quality between Lee and Doc.

Doesn't mean the trade will "work," but it was 100 percent the right decision unless you think an extra 24-48 hours might have backed off Ricciardi to the point where he would have accepted the lesser offer for Doc, AND you're sure that a competitor wouldn't have swept in and snagged Lee if he didn't.

What JFLNYC wrote about negotiating tactics and not rubbing the other guy's nose in it seems on target here.
