2009 Draft Thread

Postby ReadingPhilly » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:46:30

another squire post.
Well according to Callis, a ton of HS prospects have given very high bonus demands (Trout, Purke, Heathcott, Myers, Borchering, James, Tate, Matzek, Miller, etc.) Looks like there is going to be alot of falling talent and alot of brinksmanship.

SQUIRE

plus this from wolever:
Last year, the 27th pick, pitcher Carlos Gutierrez of the University of Miami, received a $1.29 million signing bonus from Minnesota. Is there a chance the Phils would use some of the money that would have been earmarked for the first-round pick to woo some top high school prospects out of their college commitments?

"I won't say yes and I won't say no," Wolever said. "Time will tell. It's contingent on how we draft and what we draft."

# Baltimore taking Wheeler, San Francisco taking Tyler Matzek and Atlanta taking Alex White all seem pretty strong. Atlanta would love to take Matt Purke, but the word is the higher-ups won't allow them to pay that much over slot.

How does Baltimore taking Wheeler affect Grant Green? Tigers?

do teams actually draft by position need? the chances of them being successful in the majors is so slight that i think this should be a no brainer for every team.
Why not just go storm Normandy and get shot in the face while you're at it
Why not get a plumbing license and run around high on shrooms stealing peoples' pocket change

I still think Baltimore should take Grant Green if he's there. Their top 10 prospects are literally all pitchers. They have no position players in their system

Some do, but think organizational depth more than major league personnel. I think everyone on here would agree though, draft the best players, worry about positions later on.

id say that i dont want a HS OF that can't hit a lick but can run the hurdles in 12 seconds with our first pick.

i wish at some point the phillies drafted high school players that can hit

I think the key word is "players" not athletes.

I miss the old days of the 1PM conference call draft....Seriously, what time will the Phillies pick tonight. Their first pick could be after 10PM with their 2nd after 11PM, at least by my rough calculations.

Oh man, so we can be really pissed about getting shut out by Santana, then they'll draft someone the four or five people here who know what they're talking about hate, and the rest of us will pile on with uninformed vitriol.

Could be a big night for the Phillies.

They like to draft "athletes," hoping to develop them into players, and I think it's a crazy strategy. Maybe Hewitt's early performance will shift the pendulum back a bit.

If the Nationals pick at 6:05:
#75 = 8:52 ET
#106 = 9:23 ET

If the Nationals take the full 15 minutes (6:15):
#75 = 9:02 ET
#106 = 9:33 ET

Thanks. I thought it was 5 in between first rounders but now see its 4. There are usually some delays between the pick and the starting of the clock for the next pick so we'll see. The good news is I should be home in time for the Phillies picks.
