From an outside perspective looking in at the GM situation I think it would be personally more fun to be trading away stars and rebuilding the farm than trading the farm for stars.

It would be a challenge for sure but it would be fun to be the guy doing the restocking. You'd have to put up with all kinds of hell and shit from the fans and media but still.

It would also be fun trading for the one last piece needed to be come a championship contender but I am envious of Huntington's position because really he can't do anything but go up. He might take a little heat but there are no expectations and now he can try to build a franchise in his image and go from there.
Do it again!

I just saw a report that the Dodgers agreed not to pick up Manny's option and the Manny agreed to decline arbitration. So the Dodgers will get their picks.

The Red Sox insisting on getting Bay suggests to me that the Phils had no chance unless they were willing to give up Burrell. Werth is just not a close enough substitute for Manny and it seems the Sox were (rightly, IMO) concerned about making sure their lineup didn't take too much of a hit this year. Bay's production is close enough to Manny's to make it palatable to the Sox.

The Dodgers badly need offense and they'll get the picks if they don't re-sign Manny. LaRoche's has yet to show he can hit big-league pitching, so trading him plus Morris doesn't seem to me to be an unreasonable price to pay.

The Pirates get two guys in LaRoche and Hansen who haven't yet shown they're going to make it in the majors, but either could yet turn it around. Morris has a great arm, but is very young. Moss doesn't project as anything special. Time will tell whether it works out for the Pirates.

All in all, I think all 3 teams got what they were looking for.

On the other hand we get the Pirates next weekend without Bay, Nady or Marte

but the mets have 5 games left against the pirates. we only have the 3. on the other hand, they have more games against the astros IIRC, who have been beefing up.

Manny could be a real difference-maker for the Dodgers, but there's no telling whether the difference will be good or bad. As great a hitter as he still is, his knee could flair up, he could dog it or he could just be Manny. Logic suggests he'll put out for the Dodgers to show he's worth a big FA contract. But Manny and logic don't always go together.

They were never getting Manny. They only could have fucked things up by trading a real prospect for a crappy reliever. Idiocy prevention is always the primary goal.

And we're in 1st place bitchazz.

They get a cheaper, long term player in Bay, who is putting up similar #s to Manny right now, whereas Manny could have been gone at the end of the season unless they paid $20m. This didn't help either:
"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com. "During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here.

I know you're all going to be shocked to hear this, but Peter Gammons was on ESPN radio this morning discussing the Manny trade.

Highlights:
* OPS OPS OPS OPS OPS OPS OPS
* Terry Francona is looking very thin and frail and Peter is worried about his Tito Bear. The implication was that the stress of managing Manny Ramirez did this to Francona.
* OPS OPS OPS OPS OPS
* Olney and Gammons talked on the phone about 25 times yesterday. Gammons wanted to play a few new licks that he wrote to see what Olney thought
* Jason Bay is not a utility player
* OPS
* Manny Ramirez apparently was an outrageous distraction to the entire New England region and he's not the hitter he used to be

p.s. Gammons also ripped Ed Wade a new one. "I can't understand why they would get Latroy Hawkins, or why they can't convince themselves that they're not in contention." You gotta love Eddie

I know mocking Gammons for saying OPS is funny, but I actually appreciate it. High profile journalists using those stats means I can occasionally mention OPS to my friends and not have them look at me like I'm speaking Klingon.

Manny causes cancer

The Providence Journal reports that Red Sox GM Theo Epstein met with team veterans on Wednesday, and they told him that Manny Ramirez had to go.

The players were not only tired of Manny's antics and felt that he was a distraction, but they didn't trust that they could count on him during the pennant race. One story in the Boston Herald on Friday quoted a teammate as saying "He just doesn't care." Another Herald story discussed his refusal to visit with young cancer patients, calling him a "bum." It seems most everyone involved with Manny in Boston is happy to see him go.

Actually Manny heals cancer; he just refuses to do so. And for kids, too. What a dickface

I linked to the Herald article in the Worst Sports Articles thread. You can read the whole thing if anyone needs help getting their bulimia started.

Was he traded to the Dodgers or the Kings? He's somewhat delusional, so maybe he thinks he's Gretsky.
