...and they pay 7 million. Pretty bizarre trade from the Red Sox perspective if you ask me.

The Red Sox are basically paying a huge price to have Bay under contract for next season. They gave up a hell of a lot.

If they wanted to get rid of Manny that badly, they could've placed him on waivers and given him to the claiming team for no compensation or forced the claiming team to give up prospects to avoid being on the hook for his salary. This (apparent) trade doesn't really make sense to me.

I guess they really wanted Bay. They do get him under contract for another year.

Plus they pay for the rest of Manny's contract.

Then from what I've read - you could decline the option, offer arbitration and get the picks.

From the Globe's Gordon Edes (4:20 p.m.): "It's my understanding that a trade has gone down with Manny Ramirez," Edes said on the NESN broadcat. Edes said that paperwork involving Ramirez had been faxed to the commissioner's office, and that his Red Sox sources were not calling him back, indicating they might be busy trying to get a deal done.

Yes, Theo was "busy" at 4:20.

phillies have 8 games against LA left. the mets have 0. why do the red sox always screw the phillies over with trades and non-trades? they refuse to bid abreu up for the yankees in 2006 leaving us with cj henry, they refuse to bid for santana and the mets end up getting him, and they trade ramirez to the one team in the entire league that the phillies still have to play significantly more times than the mets. i feel like there's another move or two where the red sox dicked us over indirectly. at least they didn't trade him to the marlins.

Based on his comments, I'd assume Manny would approve any waiver claim.

bgf's prospect prediction:

hansen=geoff geary
moss=tike redman
morris=carlos monestarios
laroche=morgan ensberg
Why not just go storm Normandy and get shot in the face while you're at it
Why not get a plumbing license and run around high on shrooms stealing peoples' pocket change

Post on another board:

To tell you the truth, I would love to have Manny on the Phils with his offensive production. Especially at Citizens Bank Park. I would have given up Burrell for Manny. I like Burrell and all, but inconsistancy over his career here has soured me on him.

Pirates got great return for Nady and Bay. Its nice to see the Pirates starting to undo the damage of the Littlefield era and begin rebuilding the farm. They are still a ways off but at least now there appears to be a direction to their midseason trades (that doesn't involve has-beens like Jeromy Burnitz, Derek Bell, Matt Stairs, Matt Morris, etc...).
