Isn't it a little early to get rid of your 3rd catcher?

With Shane Youman now being removed from the 40 man, that leaves 38...

who will get the other two spots?

Hmm, yeah we removed Holdzkom and Youman to get us down that low.......I guess we could give one to Benson and put him on the 15 day DL and maybe leave the possibility of Darensbourg getting a spot? He's been a good AAAA lefty over the past few years, only problem is that he's 37. I wonder if he's being seriously considered.

Also...

The Phillies are on the lookout for more pitching, but for a second southpaw reliever to complement J.C. Romero. So far, none of the other lefty relievers in camp — Fabio Castro, Vic Darensbourg and Shane Youman — has been consistent, and Mike Zagurski is still recovering from hamstring surgery.

“We might get a piece someplace else for the bullpen,” Gillick said. “We'd like to have two left-handers in the 'pen if we can.”

Mach hasn't retired, is expected back.

One minor leaguer not currently in camp at the Carpenter Complex is 2007 fourth-round draft pick Tyler Mach, who is taking a leave of absence from the team for an undisclosed reason. Mach, a 6-1, 195-pound infielder, hit .287 with five home runs and 38 RBI last season for Williamsport in the New York-Penn League. Selected by the Phillies with the 143rd overall pick last June, he hit .386 with 16 home runs as a senior at Oklahoma State. Phillies minor league director Steve Noworyta said he expects Mach to return to the diamond at some point, but said he did not know when.

A team that may have a lefty reliever to deal is Kansas City, which has four who were in the majors, ranging from excellent to decent, last year.

They're not gonna deal Ron Mahay or Jimmy Gobble, but I don't see how they also have room for Neal Musser and John Bale. Musser and Bale had ERAs in the 4s last year, but solid K per innings pitched numbers.

And if they keep all four of those guys, I don't see how they'd also keep Joel Peralta, a righty who did a decent job for them last year.

Not sure that the Phillies could offer, though. I'd hate to give up more youth for basically a 6th reliever. But I wonder if KC could use Chad Durbin as a 5th starter/swingman type. Durbin certainly would be fair return for Bale, I think.

Bale is going to be in the rotation, and Musser will make the bullpen.
