He was theirs, off the 40 man, with no cost but 25K measly dollars. And instead to save 25, they lock up a valuable 40 man spot that could be necessary later on (it might be immediate if they have any NRIs that will make the team, or it might take a while).

If he was so meritorious of a 40 man spot in March, they shouldn't have left him off in December. Just a bad job by the Red Sox.

Here's the part you're missing

Holdzkom was selected by the Phillies in last December's Rule 5 Draft. However, the Phils -- as is their right -- offered him back to the Red Sox.

But Holdzkom opted for free agency, as was his right, and the Red Sox have signed him to a Major League contract. He reported to Fort Myers on Thursday.

The Red Sox didn't have the option of paying $25,000 and bringing him back. He opted to become a FA and sign a deal with the highest bidder, in this case, the Red Sox, who gave him a major league deal, though I suspect its a split contract.

Are you sure you have the right, before the team decides to buy you back, to opt for free agency? I've never seen that before, one would think people would opt for it all the time. If you are definitely correct, then I retract what I said. It's not really a great move by the Sox (again, what was so different in March than December?), but it's not a dumb move.

Holdzkom had been Rule 5'd twice before, so maybe the third time you are selected in this manner you can opt for free agency.

He might've otherwise been a 6 year free agent if he was not a Rule 5 pick.

If they ever bring back Mystery Science Theater, as they should, I really want RosterBot on there.

I think thats correct. He debuted in 2001 and missed 2004 with TJ, so he's got 6 minor league seasons in the books.

It's not Rosterbot's fault that it's not a person.

As with all robots, I mostly just fear the day that RosterBot rises up to wreak a bloody vengeance upon his human oppressors (that's us).
