Roster Watch

Postby bleh » Sat Feb 16, 2008 20:33:00

I wrote a script that checks the Phils website every hour and posts any changes to the 40 man roster on here. I'm going to start it now and see if it works. When I start it, it should reply to this thread with the full roster. Then it won't post again unless there are changes to the roster, which might not be for a while. Hopefully this won't screw up too bad...

edit: works so far

nice idea, sure to be appreciated.

for extra credit, any means of highlighting changes when they do take place? Displaying ONLY the change detected would be almost as good
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Thanks. After that first post It will only show the changes, not the whole roster. So if Tom Gordon were to change his number & John Ennis were cut, it would post this:

46 John Ennis R/R 6-5 220 10/17/79
45 Tom Gordon R/R 5-10 200 11/18/67
changed to
48 Tom Gordon R/R 5-10 200 11/18/67

niiiiice. You'll probably want to re-post the complete roster at intervals - once a week, once every 2 weeks, once every 5 or 10 change notices - so visitors can get the current roster picture easily.

in your example, a reader can pick up that gordon's # changed. With Ennis, the info doesn't identify what has happened with him - that he is gone. Any way to supply info that a player has been dropped (or added)?

Not sure if even this happens, but does your script deal with situations where a player is removed, but no replacement is immediately identified? For example, Ennis is cut, but no player added at the same time.

I do not mean to make work for you, just asking so I understand what's taking shape. To me, it's good stuff.

I might add more features later to make things clearer but right now it does what its primary purpose is and most of us should be able to figure out what's going on. I might have it edit the current roster into the first post.

I like that young George Bush delivers the roster changes. I hear them in his silly accent. If you wanted, we could probably set up an account you could use just for this.

Just registered an account as RosterBot, awaiting authorization. Can you move this thread to the main board?

the *s denote that a player has been optioned to the minors.

you'll be seeing plenty more of this by the time spring training ends.
if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.
