Phillies Sign Geoff Jenkins

Postby phuturephillies » Thu Dec 20, 2007 13:31:59

What bothers me is, when Werth starts, if Jenkins comes in to pinch hit for him, we're left with only Snelling as an OF on the bench, and he's left handed too. Helms is our big RH pinch hitter :(

mlbtraderumors.com:
A $6.5MM platoon outfielder who doesn't really mash the pitchers he's supposed to match? It's an uninspired signing.

Uninspired?

Somehow he's gotten really popular by basically doing what prosportsdaily does.

What about Roberson? Or are you already he entered the game in the 7th as Burrell's caddie?
Yes son. I'm the best mono-thingy guy there ever was.

I wanted Cameron, because he's right handed, and that's what this team sorely needs with the departure of Rowand - a decent right handed bat. Cameron could hit 20-25 HR playing in CBP - I'm thinking it would have done for him what it did for Rowand this year.

I would have also taken a flyer on Milton Bradley for the same reason, but the Rangers beat us to the punch on that one.

The deal sounds pretty sensible in terms of money, and more importantly duration, but as I was reading through the thread right now, I got confused trying to count up our RH and LH pinch hitters. Then Floppy spelt it out.

So yeah, not happy with the lack of flexibility, and how the bench management could work against us, as noted by others. Still on the whole, solid enough.

So we get rid of a Geoff and get another Geoff.

In my life, I've never met a Geoff (other than Geary).

Can't we sign a Jeff?

Well, that's why they should be willing to use Coste as a PH.

Unless they carry 3 catchers, you can forget that. Unless they somehow feel comfortable with Bruntlett as the emergency catcher.

Padres offered a 1 year deal at, lets say, roughly 6M.

No other teams are reported to be interested in Jenkins or have give him offers.

Phillies give him 2 years at 6.5M + an option at 7.5M which he can either vest over 1 year or by combining 2 years together + gave an option outside of that framework which he and the team hold together.

Did we outbid ourselves here?

Is it so we have additional flexibility in the OF through 2010 in case Burrell and Werth both leave?

Was he promised to be the starting LF next year when Burrell leaves?

Is he leverage against Burrell so the Phillies can extend Pat at a reasonable rate?

Only against LHP (as his splits indicate) and only if we have a 3rd catcher available..

He is not afraid to take huge swings at pitches and miss them by 3 feet. He is actually a pretty good litmus test as to whether your team's manager is a moron. If said manager ever allows Jenks to have even 1 AB against a lefty, you have your answer."

Given the full universe of needs and resources, this was a smart move. I just have a feeling Jenkins will have a decent (not great, but decent) bounceback next year, and if Charlie uses him right he'll hit something like .270/.340/.490. That's fine for a third OF.

At least all three of our starting outfielders have good hoses. The ladies will never be disappointed.

One of my cousins actually spells his name Geoff; only one I know though.

I was going to say Werth was the emergency catcher, but then I realized that in this situation, he's out of the game already.

Helms would not be a PH either because he'd start the game at 3rd against the LHP.

That's the thing with multiple platoons, your bench all hits with the other hand.

OK, so to get to this scenario, you'd need a LHSP, then a RHMR, then a LH closer. That's basically just the Mets that can do that to us. If you figure the starter goes 5 or 6, that's probably 2, maybe 3 PAs for the 6 hitter. By the time Jenkins would come in, it'd be the 7th inning and then by the time he'd be due up again, it would be the 9th if he's even due up. Also, Snelling wouldn't be able to PH because he'd be in the game for Burrell by then (unless Bruntlett is the new Burrell caddy).
