We were -1 on our goatee quota when Rowand left.

1. Jenkins will be valuable in 2008. He'll put up a higher OPS against righties than either Victorino or Werth. Players like Lohse and Silva could easily have a repeat of 2006 and be worthless.

2. His price is reasonable.

3. The signing is only two years, so he doesn't handicap them long term.

If the Phillies didn't spend the money on Jenkins or Cameron they probably would have either not spent it or spent it on someone who is shaky like Lohse. I like spending it on Jenkins better.

Gillick sounded like he expected them to add no more than a reliever the rest of the off-season.. So this is the payroll or a touch more.

I wasn't big on this deal in the rumor stage but now that it has happened I am happy as pie. Agree with above points, plus:

4. Reportedly a great clubhouse guy, and should help fill void left by Rowand (Not sure if I really buy into this but what the heck - it makes me feel better about the team's chemistry)

I agree. When it was at the rumor stage I was negative on them taking ABs away from Werth for not a big gain, but now I like it. Of course I like because it's a positive thing to do with the money as opposed as an Adam Eaton thing to do. You know you hate management when the absence of bad is a cause for celebration.

If he gets 25 PAs against lefties ...

reality check time. your number of 25 is not realistic for a guy that actually gets the 400ish plate appearances that we seem to be counting on. i think it is generally acknowledged that platoons of loften-michaels in 2005 and of inky-eisy-chamberlin-thompson in 1993 were about as good as it gets.
loften had 48-358 pas vs lh and rh
thompson 65-322
eisenreich 58-304

the ratios just don't get much better than that for guys who see regular action in the field. if you want to hold jenkins under 25 pa's versus lefties, you want him well under 300 pa's in total.

you simply can't pull the lefty hitter every time a lefty pitcher comes in.
the only way to keep the appearences versus lefties low is to restrict jenkins mostly to pinch-hitting.

okay clearly i was WAY off on jenkins' performance, but damn, i pegged the 25 PA against lefties on the spot.

Jenkins vs LHP: 25 PA exactly, .130/.160/.130.

of course, my numbers for him turned out to be way off, but at least i pegged the 25 PA :)
