But only the Eagles profess to be the Gold Standard of the NFL! Anyway, it appears the Browns and Eagles are dead even in Super Bowl Championships. And if you want to go pre-Super Bowl the Browns actually have a more storied history.

As of the 2010 Super Bowl, 14 of the 32 NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl (4 have never been in one):

Minnesota Vikings (0-4)
Buffalo Bills (0-4)
Cincinnati Bengals (0-2)
Philadelphia Eagles (0-2)
Tennessee Titans (0-1)
San Diego Chargers (0-1)
Atlanta Falcons (0-1)
Carolina Panthers (0-1)
Arizona Cardinals (0-1)
Seattle Seahawks (0-1)
Cleveland Browns
Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars
Detroit Lions

I hate the Eagles. A lot. Don't look to me to defend them. They're still leagues ahead of the Browns.

Today's Browns have only a name in common with the team with all the NFL championships. It's not the same franchise.

Not that this matters. That "gold standard" thing is a stupid red herring.

Isn't it technically the same franchise? Baltimore had to become a new franchise when they moved and left all of the records/name/history in Cleveland, where the Browns were deactivated for a few years, not completely reconceived.

Whatever, there's no continuity.

I would tend to think that the continuity is a lot less important in football than baseball. I could be wrong. I think baseball has a lot more old-timers still associated with the franchise in an official capacity (the Phillies are the prime example of this old school thinking), and the org runs much much deeper than the Big squad, since each baseball franchise has 5-6 minor league teams, and a roster of hundreds of players under their control. With football you have the 50-some pro players, and a handful of practice squad guys. And a new NFL owner is likely to gut the front office and replace it with "his" people anyway, so even if they had stayed in Cleveland, the only think remaining would have been the 30-40 guys who carried over from the previous season. And within 5-7 years, that's mostly gone too.

This discussion about the identity of the NFL franchise currently based in Cleveland is mostly besides the point.

The Joe Banner winter 2011 media tour continued yesterday - T-shirt sales are brisk, sources say - with an appearance on WIP radio alongside Howard Eskin and Ike Reese.

In perhaps his toughest rhetorical challenge, Banner tried to assert that the six-time Super Bowl champion Steelers, who have appeared in three of the last six Super Bowls and won two of them, really aren't any more successful than the Eagles on balance, because they haven't made the playoffs nine of the last 11 years, or been to five conference championship games in the last decade, the way the Eagles have

I have a signicant love/hate relationship with the Eagles. They are my team, no question about it, but Lurie and Banner are such fucking dicks that I find it hard to like them sometimes. This all started for me back in August of 2001, when the Eagles/Ravens preseason game was cancelled because of NexTurf installation issues. At the time, Banner said it was an "embarrassment" for the city - the same city that put the turf in at no charge to the fucking Eagles, and that is contributing $150M+ it doesn't have to their fucking playground they use 12 times a year, at most. Have never liked them since, am awaiting the day Lurie sells the team and Banner crawls back into whatever hole he crawled out of.

Re: Vick.

I don't get the Vick hate. He did something awful. I hate what he did. But let's not pretend that animal cruelty isn't a huge thing all people do all over the place everywhere.

More to the point, while what Vick did really turns my stomach, the man went to prison. He served close to a maximum sentence for his offenses. He paid his debt, he deserves the opportunity to earn his living in a way that he sees fit, so long it doesn't involve dogs. If Vick opened a dog-walking business, I could get the hate. But he's playing NFL football. As a friend of mine said to me, imagine what would happen if he COULDN'T play football - that's when you should be worried. At least in the NFL, the world will be keeping a close eye on him. if he weren't in the NFL, who knows what he might do, or who he might be spending his time with. What else is Vick qualified to do?

And finally, I'd point out that if you are going to reject Vick's right to play NFL football, you're essentially saying prisons themselves should be done away with. After all, if, once you leave prison, you cannot engage in the profession of your choice (within reasonable limits - no school teaching for child molesters, dog-walking for dog killers, etc.), what exactly is the point of prison? We might as well just shoot anyone who committs any crime.
