Just found a travel website using one of my photos of Brigantine from about 5 years ago. Not only did they not give me any credit, they added their own watermark. Fuckers.

send them an invoice for like $2000
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

I'm a terrible teacher and this post may end up all over the place.

This is where I started ... Scott Kelby's books and blogs are great.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Digital-Photo ... 0321934946

Other than that, it's a lot of trial and error. I spent a whole day shooting in Arches. I didn't realize how badly I screwed up a lot of shots until about an hour before sunset. Speaking of, best landscape shots come within an hour of sunrise/sunset. Light is very important for landscape shots. The light on the horizon needs to be perfect. You won't get anything close to those colors any other time of the day. I think sunrise is better though, especially on damp mornings. The dampness reflects light better.

I still mainly stick to aperture priority and knowing the ISO limits of my gear. On top of that you really need the eye and figure out your post processing techniques. You can do a lot with Lightroom but you don't want to do too much. My post processing is down to maybe a minute a photo. Every now and then I find one that I like to play with though.

Look for angles you wouldn't normally expect from what your shooting.

Some examples:

Sunset, the stolen photo. Pretty close to sunset, so you get richer colors and much less white light. If I were to take this at noon, it'd be a boring, colorless photo.Image

Screwing up aperture. This photo should be great, but it was shot at like f/4 ... Should have been f/22 or at least about f/12. Such a flat image. No texture whatsoever. You can't make out the people:

By the time I realized I totally screwed my settings it was almost dark, but this one came out decent:

Also, the zoo is always a great place to play around with shots.

My mistake in Arches is that I left that Kelby book back at the campsite. To this day, I still carry it with me on travel.

heh ... sent them a cease and desist. told them they have 72 hours to remove it or I'll sue them for $100k lol. I really don't care if people use my photos. I don't sell them. I may include them in websites that I build but I don't charge for the the photos. What pisses me off is that the person watermarked the bottom of it. You don't do that shit.

mom thanks for that long post. gonna probably buy that book.

thoughts on this lens? seems to have good reviews for what it is. lower end zoom lens, plastic body. better than the kit lens my camera came with for sure.

I don't own it myself but the consensus is that it's a good value, a nice, versatile all-around lens. It's not ideal for low light or portraits due to the slow aperture, but a fast zoom in that range would be huge, heavy, and would probably cost five times as much.

My dad, who has been a Nikon DSLR user for as long as Nikon had made DSLRs, recently switched to a Sony a6000 (the APS-C equivalent of the a7) and has been very, very impressed.

I live in Chester county. No idea where you are. But I'm being serious here. Would love to learn some things from ya.

Any cool locations in the burbs? Looking for a spot tomorrow.
