People drop their kids off in one store while they go shopping in another. I've worked at three different stores in the mall where I work Warner Brothers, Gymboree, and now Border's Express. Stores with things for kids to do to keep their entertained while their parents do whatever they have to do.
I get so mad when little kids are in my store all by themselves for over an hour. Typically we call security and bring the kid behind the register where we can keep an eye on them. A few months ago a young girl was kidnapped from the mall and they found her body in the woods nearby. If I can stop that from happening I will.
Today I noticed a young girl sitting in the floor reading a book. I kept a close eye on her while I rang my customers and the moment my line was gone I approached her. I asked her if her parents were in the store. No. Did she know where they were? Yes. How old was she? 12. She was a little 12 though...I'd have guessed nine. I asked if her parents had cell phones and did she know the number. Yes. (Typically the kids don't know the cell numbers or even their home number.) I had her call the number. No answer. I brought her behind the cashwrap and it was obvious that she was absolutely annoyed. Tough. She told me she was going to go to Gap to get her parents. I told her she had to stay until they came back. I wasn't about to have a little girl wander around the mall looking for her parents. What if they weren't in Gap anymore? I told my manager that if her parents weren't there by two I was calling security who would then call the cops because this is child endangerment. At ten of two...over an hour after I first spotted her her older brother came in to get her. I was disappointed because I wanted the parents to come so I could tell them a thing or two.
I know that some of you might be thinking that 12 is old enough to be in the mall without parents. It's old enough to be in the mall without parents if there's more than one. Packs of loud, chattering girls are much harder to kidnap than one girl on her own.
A few weeks ago it was a five year old girl and before that it was a nine year old girl. This is getting ridiculous! And I hate to sound racist or anything but it's always the Asian girls. Always. Every time the parents have dropped the daughter off in my store but have taken the son with them. And one time we'd brought the girl behind the cashwrap and the mom came back looking for her (we knew it was her because the daughter had told us what she was wearing). She came in looked around and when she didn't see her daughter she just sort of shrugged and left the store. If I found out my child was not in the place I left her I would have been beside myself rather than hohum about it. I know that girls are not wanted the way boys are in those countries but I care what happens to these little girls. I care if someone kidnaps, rapes, them or worse. Maybe their parents won't care if someone kidnaps their daughter but I do.
I'm just so angry over this that I had to post it. It happens too often and it makes me want to just slap someone silly. In America we value our daughters just as much as our sons.
